3 Bodies Found, Likely Missing Israeli Youths

June 30. The New York Times reports that Israelis found three bodies buried in a hastily made shallow grave "in an open field between Halhul and Beit Kahil". The three Israelis are missing Eyal Yifrach, 19, Gilad Shaar, 16, and Naftali Fraenkel, 16 (who is also an American citizen).

The U.S. group Jewish Voices for Peace made this statement, "We are opposed to any violence against civilians, which is a violation of international law and an affront to our values. We hope that the punishment of Palestinian society as a whole – itself a violation of international law - will not intensify in place of real justice in the aftermath of this tragedy. May we honor their memories through our commitment to a just peace."

The "Jewish Press" says that the chief suspects are Marwan Qawasmeh and Amer Abu Aisha who allegedly disappeared shortly before the Israeli youths disappeared. The site says the homes of the families are being torn down.

Comment1: Home destruction, a form of collective punishment, is widely condemned by believers in human rights, but was widely practiced by Israeli governments until six or seven years ago. You will note that the two men are suspects, but without even a trial their whole families will be punished.

Comment2: Statement from Mazin Qumsiyeh from Beit Sahour, Palestine, "A sadly familiar scene over the past two weeks in Palestine: 10 Palestinians (including a 7 and 15 year old) and three Israelis (16 – 19 year old) were killed. Dozens of Palestinian homes were demolished in the past two weeks. Statement continued here.

Netanyahu calls for Kurdish independence from Iraq

June 29. Israeli PM Netanayahu has called for the breakup of Iraq with the Kurdish northeast becoming its own independent country. "They deserve it," he says. The Israeli paper Ha'aretz reports that "Israel has been maintaining a discrete relationship with the Iraqi Kurds for years. "

Comment1: Well, it certainly helps to have someone of Netanyahu's moral stature calling for Kurdish rights. :)

Comment2: It certainly fits into the Zionist game to have the Middle East broken up into many small countries, each battling each other.

Protesting Israeli Anti-Asylum Policy They Attempt to Go to Egypt and are Arrested

June 27. from Ha'aretz: "Hundreds of African asylum seekers left an open detention center in southern Israel on Friday afternoon and began marching toward a nearby border crossing with Egypt. The group said it wishes to cross into Egypt in light of the government's policies on asylum seekers."

See full Haaretz report here

Comment: The "open detention centers" are is a huge virtual prison in the Negev desert where asylum seekers (whose applications are illegally ignored by the government) must live with lousy food and inaedqute health care. They can "leave" any time, but they must check in several times a day. There's no place for them to go and return in time.

Israel Suspends Soldier Who was at Site of May 15 Killings - Slap on Hand Coming?

May 29. So far the Israeli soldier is only suspended an unnamed solider who is said to have been the vacinity of two teenagers, Muhammad Abu Thahr and Nadim Nuwara, were shot in the heart an hour or so apart near Ofer prison. The two may have been among those who had been throwing stones earlier in the day, but who were doing nothing other than walking

Video from security cameras and CNN both show what was happening on that street and so Netanyahu government thought it must have to make some gesture.

Comment1: In the Orwellian world of Israel justice the soldier at this point is only suspected of firing a rubber bullet without permission. The IDF has maintained no soldier fired live ammunition.

Comment2: No fabrication is too fantastic for the Zionists in excusing the murders. Variously they say no live bullets were fired, the video was faked, the Palestinians did it or even that the boys are still alive. Ben Ehrenreich who has seen the bodies says otherwise.

10th Turkish Man Finally Dies from Israeli Attack on Mavi Marmara

May 24. Ugur Suleyman Soylemez, 51 years of age, has died. He was attacked on May 31, 2010 by Israeli commandos on the Turkish ship the Mavi Marmar which had been trying to break the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip. Soylemez was mortally injured and remained in a coma for almost four years. The Israeli government attacked the ship while in was in international waters in the Mediterranean.

The Turkish government which initially took a proud stand against the killling of its citizens made a deal with the Netanyahu government to accept cash compensation and drop all attempts to bring anyone to justice for the piratical attack. Attorneys for the families of the now ten dead victims and many more injured say they will refuse to accept compensation if all those who did the killing and ordered it are allowed to get off scott free.

Comment1: Rest in peace brother. You are not forgotten, but have earned a place in glory.

Comment2: Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan made a big show for a while in downgrading relations with Turkish ally Israel. When the revolution in Syria began things changed, Erdogan started assisting the various sectarian groups in Syria and began making up with Israel. Then came the Gezi Park movement against Erdogan's development excesses in Turkey which Erdogan put down with violence. Now he is rudely dismissing criticisim after the Soma mine disaster where over 300 miners died. See our Turkey archive

Former Top Israeli Atomic Official Says Iran 10 Years from Bomb

May 8. Brigadier General (res.) Uzi Eilam, who for a decade headed the Israel Atomic Energy Commission, does not believe that Tehran is even close to having a bomb. He spoke to the Israeli paper Yedioth Ahronot. He said he doesn't even know if Iran is interested in an atomic bomb.

Obama and Kerry Send Apache Helicopters to al-Sisi

Apirl 24. Despite(or because of) over 3,000 political deaths since the Egypt coup regime took power and ten or 15 thousand in hellish prisons the Obama regime has started sending some military aid to Egypt, Apache helicopters. It's only to "fight terrorists", of course.

Comment: And if no one makes a squwak more and more aid to come, jets, guns, bombs, lethal tear gas, all to fight "terrorists"

Says Obama Pulled Back From Syria Attack Because British
Told Him Sarin Charges False

April 6. One of the U.S. foremost journalists says the Obama Administration pulled back from a massive attack on Syria because it was told by British authorities that the charges about Syrian government use of sarin gas didn't stand up. The jounalist Seymour Hersh, wrote about it an an article in the London Review of Books. "British intelligence had obtained a sample of the sarin used in the 21 August attack and analysis demonstrated that the gas used didn’t match the batches known to exist in the Syrian army’s chemical weapons arsenal."

46-1

April 1. The U.N. General Assembly Human Rights Council voted 46-1 including nine EU member states, have endorsed four resolutions that describe Israel as a persistent violator of international law and guilty of systematic discrimination. They detailed a long list of offenses, used the word "condemn" repeatedly and made a number of "demands".

The Electronic Intifada sums it up here.

Comment: One rouge nation defied the international consensus and voted against the resolutions. If you can guess the country you win a zeppelin trip to the top of the Empire State Building......Oh, did I give it away?

Former Israeli Prime Minister Olmert Found Guilty of Taking a Bribe

March 30. The Independent reports "According to the original 2012 indictment, millions of dollars illegally changed hands to promote a series of real estate projects"

Avi Shavit in Haaretz says "everyone" knew how corrupt Olmert was, but the few who raised their voices were ostracized.

Comment: Minor footnote, Olmert was the Prime Minister when Israel committed the Gaza Massacre of 2008-9, over 300 chilren killed, 1400 in all

Comment2: Two years ago J-Street, the soft AIPAC had Olmert address their convention. Even Forward critcized.

White House Shows Mock "Concern" After Egypt Mega-Death Verdict

Even the New York Times was unhappy with the weak criticism of the Egyptian court that sentenced 529 Egyptians to death for supposedly being involved in the murder of an Egyptian policeman. "It followed a trial that lasted little more than two days — not enough time to make a case against even a single person, much less 529 people." Unsaid is the fact that whatever happened at the police station took place after the killings of over 1,000 of the Muslim Brotherhood. The State Department didn't even condemn the show trials and the verdicts. All it had said was that it was "deeply concerned".

This follows months of coddling especially by Secretary of State Kerry.

Comment: Even the conservative Washington Post has been criticizing Kerry for his coddling of the Egyptian regime.

Comment2: Recall Kerry (and Obama behind the scenes) successfully got Congress to pass a bill providing an easy path for the Egyptian army officers to get back all their military aid

Comment3: For those who say cutting off aid to Egypt will have no effect reply that the next step is to lean on Saudi Arabia hand have it cut off its tens of billions in gifts to the regime. That they will notice.

Comment4: On March 25 State Department spokesperson Mary Heart did come out with a somewhat stronger statement "flagrant disregard for the standards of justice". source Democracy Now! 3/26.

12 Killed by Shelling in Yarmouk Over Weekend

March 24. Aid is down to a trickle. People line up even during the shelling. This weekend a dozen were killed by the Syrian government. The Palestinians within the camp have no weapons at all, but the al-Qaeda linked al-Nusra group infiltrated the camp and started fighting again. The Palestinian PFLP-GC is on the side of the Assad regime. It enforces the siege and attacks Palestinians in the camp. Over 100 have starved to death.

Photo of Starving Syrian-Palestinians Shown in Times Square

March 20. After over 23 million tweets Reuters put the now iconic photo of starving Syrian-Palestinians up on its huge Times Square screen.

Youngsters Dress Up as Ku Klux Klan Members for Purim
Ho Hum!

March 20. The Jerusalem Post reports that 17 high school students dressed up in white sheets for the religious holiday of Purim. Others in the group blackened their face and seemed to be shackled and kneeling. The students even posed with a large wooden cross.

On the holidary Purim it was traditional for little children to dress up as all the characters of Purim, even the "bad guy" Haman. This seems to have morphed in Israel to a kind of Halloween.

Mondoweiss reports that the high school principal defended the costumes. The principal told a TV station that the costumes "created an interesting and important discussion".

Comment: After a ten minute search on Google and in the ADL website I see no mention of the outrageous incident from the Anti-Defamation League. Nowadays the ADL is known for its fanatic defense of Israeli apartheid, but it was founded in 1913 after the lynching of a Jewish man, Leo Frank, in Georgia.

Comment2: A short google search does not find any criticism from the NAACP or other of the meek civil rights organizations or commentators. They are out of their minds, not caring about the intense anti-black African racism in Israel.

Comment3: There wasn't even criticism of Jews carrying a cross!

BDS Costing Israel "Billions" Says Finance Minister

Feb. 26. Israeli Finance Minister Yair Lapid claims BDS is having a large effect. According to Defense News Lapid, " has assessed BDS damage at $5.7 billion in lost exports each year, a $3.1 billion erosion in annual gross domestic product and immediate unemployment of some 10,000 people."

Did Turkish Govt Assassinate 3 Women in Paris?

Feb. 13. Sensational story in Der Spiegel, a German newspaper, on the evidence which appears to tie the Turkish intelligence agency MIT to the murder of three Kurdish women in January 2013. Here's the article. Reportedly the facts are so incriminating that German intelligence is downgrading its ties to the MIT organization.

A Bang on the Door in the Middle of the Night

February 13. Such a shocking noise could scare anyone, anywhere, but if you happen to live in Occupied Palestine it could bring a truly horrifying cold shiver of fear: fear of the soldiers whose job, whose orders, are to apprehend the criminal in your home. What criminal? Your child… your 5-year old, or 9-year old, or 12 or 15 year old; they aren't particularly choosy. They will take any child in order to intimidate both the children and their families. It is now standard operating procedure for the soldiers of the occupation to grab children from their beds in the middle of the night and take them to prison in Israel, sometimes for months, and subject them to cruel, inhumane treatment and sometimes outright torture. Watch this Australian television documentary, but be prepared to be shocked and angry. Consider the evidence given in this film and make your own decision. Ask yourself: "Who is the terrorist?"

New York Times Sees AIPAC's Power Lessened

Mark Landler writes in the New York Times that AIPAC is taking a beating on the Iran issue. It has pulled back on its demand that new sanctions be levied on Iran. Obama has dug in on the issues and AIPAC is reluctant to take him on. He writes, "for the moment, Mr. Obama has successfully made the case that passing new sanctions against Tehran now could scuttle the nuclear talks and put America on the road to another war."

Landler writes, "Aipac’s headaches go beyond Iran. In September, it threw an army of lobbyists behind an effort to win a congressional mandate for Mr. Obama’s threatened military strike on Syria. Facing certain failure in Congress, the president pulled the plug on the effort."

Comment1: AIPAC does seem to be able to continue to bring rivers of money to the Israeli generals. In December Congress gave Israel triple what Obama asked for in an extra amount of "defense" money.

Times Comes Out against Bill to Punish the ASA

Feb. 3. Saying it would "chill" free speech the New York Times editorial board has come out against the bill that would cut off funds to NY colleges that give any money to the ASA or people attending ASA functions. It call for governor Cuomo to veto the bill if it reaches him.

Other reports say that the bill which seemed to be steaming through the NY legislature is now stopped at a committee with no plans for a hearing.

Comment: Kudos to all the opponents of the bill, particularly the efforts of Jewish Voice for Peace

Bibi's Knickers in a Twist - Critcizies Kerry

Feb. 2. "Bibi" Netanyahu is all upset that Sec. of State Kerry predicted lots more BDS if the current peace talks fail. Netanyahu said, “Attempts to impose a boycott on the state of Israel are immoral and unjust,” according to the New York Times. The Times said this was a "sharp retort". Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs Yuval Steinits was more pointed. “Israel cannot be expected to negotiate with a gun to its head," he said.

This all very well may be for show. The online site "Times of Israel" says Israel is ready to accept Kerry's "framework" for peace, "whose terms will not have to be signed off as fully binding by the Israeli and Palestinian leaderships". Supposedly the "framework" would give Israel land with 80% of the settlers. There would be no return of refugees to Israel. Nothing definite would be said about Jerusalem in the "framework". There would be new security arrangements in the Jordan Valley (permanent Israeli troops all along the Jordan border?) And what do Palestinians get out of all this "land swaps".

Comment1: A non-binding "framework" for indefinite talks. It sounds like more twaddle to prepare the world for talks going on forever, but it may be more sinister. It could very well be that the "framework" is an iron cage with the talk of it being "non-binding" just a propaganda to fool Palestinians about what's really going on.

Comment2: Norman Finkelstein and thinks Obama, Kerry and Abbas are going to use the unprecedented weaknesses and collaborations of Arab states as an opportunity to ram through an awful agreement.

Comment3: A group of Palestinians is reminding their "leader" (whose term as PA president ended years ago)that basic Palestinian rights cannot be negotiated away despite what deal he cooks up.

Comment4: As usual Israeli government leader Steinitz equates peaceful boycotts with a "gun to the head". One is surprised he didn't call it "the moral equivalent of genocide".

Scarlett Leaves Oxfam over Sodastream Commercial

Jan. 31. Scarlett Johansson, a celebrity spokesperson for the charity Oxfam, under fire for making commercials for the Israeli (settlement) product Sodastream, has ended her relationship with Oxfam after being criticized by the organization.

Comment: The usual suspects will try to bankrupt Oxfam. Make a contribution online by clicking here and thank them by sending an email to: donorinfo@oxfamamerica.org

Snowden Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Jan. 31 Two Norweigian legislators have nominated Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize. Snowden, of course, is being sought by the cops of Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama for revealing the massive NSA spying program. Obama's director of national intelligence, James Clapper, (who has not been indicted even though he lied to Congress about NSA activities) has suggested the journalists are "accomplices" of Snowden for publishing his leaks.

Comment: A Nobel Peace Prize is no guarantee of safety. Laureate Yaseer Arafat was murdered with polonium ten years ago by persons unknown after being threated with death by Israeli authorities.

Shia in Syria are Being Starved, Too - Cockburn

Jan. 30. Patrick Cockburn in an article on Counterpunch says "the largest single community currently besieged and on the edge of starvation in Syria lives in two Shia towns west if Aleppo, Zahraa and Nobl, with a combined population 45,000. In this case the besiegers are Sunni rebels"

Comment: Starvation of any civilian group is a war crime and must be condemned

AFP Says Supplies Made it Into Yarmouk Today

Jan. 18 Quoting a pro-Assad Palestinian group PFLP-General Command the AFP Report on Yarmouk">French news agency AFP says some supplies made it into Yarmouk today.

Comment: See our podcast with Nidal Bitari who says the amount allowed in was insignificant

Nearly 50 Have Starved to Death in Yarmouk

Jan. 17. The Washington Post reports that 48 Palestinians have died from hunger and related causes in the siege of Yarmouk camp.

Comment: Listen to our 1/18 podcast with Nidal Bitari about attempts to bring food into the camp.

Israeli Government Minister "A Jew always has a much higher [level] soul than a goy
even if he is a homosexual..."

Jan. 13. Uri Misgav writing in Ha'aretz takes the above quote from an interview with Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan, the deputy minister of religious services in another Israeli paper, Ma'ariv. "The hierarchy of the human species as told by Eli Ben Dahan". It was first noted when it was published two weeks ago. Misgav's article goes into the question more thoroughly talking about what he believes is the order of human beings according to Dahan's view with "Jewish men who have sexual relations with Jewish women" on top and "goy" women nine ranks below.

Comment1: The word "goy" is often translated as non-Jew, but for Jews it has a more derisive mocking contemptuous meaning. . According to Tablet magazine it is not offically allowed in Scrabble games.

Comment2: Dahan, of course, is not some lone freak. He is, according to Misgav, "an Orthodox rabbi, a senior representative of the Haredi nationalist movement" and "he represents the Tekuma faction, which is the settler, Haredi nationalist wing of Habayit Hayehudi". We in the United States who pay for this Israeli government to the tune of 3+++ billion a year might want to object to this racism (it's bigotry, who cares that it's glorified by using the word religious).

Israel Didn't Give a Single Eritrean or Sudanese Refugee Status

January 8. In the wake over a march of tens of thousands of asylum seekers in Tel Aviv on Jan. 8 the Israeli paper Ha'aretz did some digging and found that "Israel has not granted refugee status to a single Eritrean or Sudanese national, even though European s tates have granted such status to more than 70 percent of asylum-seekers from those countries."

Comment1: That country Sudan should ring a bell. The Israeli-Apartheid apologists wrang their hands over the Sudanese of the Darfur area, claiming that showed how vile Arabs were towards blacks. Now when actual Sudanese are asking for refuge in Israel they are treated like dirt.

Comment 2: Jews in the 1930's knew what it was like to be refugees and turned away. We just mentioned the plight of the 900 aboard the German ship, the St. Louis who were turned away by Cuba and the U.S. Their pitless descendants at the helm of the Israeli government and in the racist mobs in the street forget all that.

Israeli Group Calls for End to Putting Prisoner Children in Outdoor Cages

Jan. 3. The Public Committee Against Torture in Israel has exposed the Israeli practice of putting children prisoners in outdoor cages in the winter. It said, "children suspected of minor crimes were subjected to 'public caging', threats and acts of sexual violence and military trials without representation". Three-quarters of the children were imprisoned for throwing stones.

Poll Result - Afghan War Least Popular in U.S. History

Dec. 30 A newly released CNN poll puts support for the war at less than 20%, far less than the Iraq war at its lowest point. The Obama Administration trumpets that the U.S. is leaving at the end of 2014. At the same time the administration is planning to keep 10,000 soldiers in Afghanistan indefintely. Early in the week the National Intelligence Estimate said that Obama's "surge" was a failure and that if lots of U.S. troops didn't stay in the country all the "gains" would rapidly disappear.

To see the article we mention above go to our new archive on Afghanistan.

Three Year Old Killed and the New York Times Just Chalks it Up as a "Response"

Dec. 26. Hala Abu Sbeikha, age 3 ofMaghazi refugee camp was killed by an Israeli missile as part of 16 Israeli air strikes against Gaza on Christmas Eve.

Isabel Kershner writes in the New York Times mentions the bombing explaining it was retaliation for a sniper attack that killed an Israeli worker. Israel "immediately responded..." Unmentioned is the long string of killings of Gaza Palestinians in the last few days not to speak of the the beastly conditions forced on the whole population for decades.

Comment: The Times purpose as always is to build sympathy for Israel.

Comment2: The Israeli worker who was killed was "fixing" the prison fence surrounding Gaza. The girl was killed in central Gaza. But killing any Palestinian will do as a "response". Why are Palestinians constantly being killed day after day in Gaza and in the West Bank? Believe it or not the Zionists want to keep stirring the pot, to provoke incidents, so Israel can constantly be in a state of fear and war

Comment3: Listening to the news briefs of Amy Goodman on "Democracy Now" this morning we got the same report as Kershners! Amy, this is beneath you. This must be corrected! Here's the quote from the DN! transcript, "Palestinian militants killed an Israeli man working on the border wall with Gaza, prompting an Israeli strike that killed a three-year-old Palestinian girl." Write and demand a retraction or explanation stories@democracynow.org

They Kept Local Doctors Away Til the Man They Shot Died

Dec. 21. IMEMC reports that Israeli soldiers invaded Qalqilia on the 18th and shot PA Security Officer Saleh Samir Yassin and prevented local medical people from treating him until he died. Dozens of soldiers entered the Nazzal neighborhood at shot Yassin, 28.

Comment: Seemingly every day one or two Palestinians are killed by Israelis on the West Bank. A google search doesn't even find a mention of Yassin's killing in the Israeli press

National Indian Newspaper Reports on Jewish Letter to the National Football League

December 21. Football Commissioner Roger Goodell hasn't responded to the letter, but Indian Country Today published Stanley Heller's article on the letter by 100 Jews calling for the Washington NFL team to be renamed or the team to be seized and sold.

The letter informs Goodell that a Jewish petition had been created calling for producers not to make "redskin" products and for the NFL to seize and sell the team if its owner, Dan Snyder, did not rename the team.

Obama Asks for $96 Million More for Israel...Congress Gives $284 Million

Dec. 12 The Jewish newspaper Forward reports that Congress gave Israel three times what the Obama Administration asked in extra money for Israeli-U.S. defense cooperation. This is in addition to the $3.1 billion Israel gets from U.S. taxpayers each year.

In other news 1.2 million Americans are to lose their extended unemployement beneifts at the end of the year.

Comment1: The anti-Semitic Congress and its Jew hating president once again scimp when it comes to giving Israel what it needs to defend itself from imminent genocide and a second holocaust. If the U.S. had any decency at all it would give Israeli Apartheid its entire income and then Israel would generously give the U.S. whatever money it didn't need.

Comment2: In case you didn't get it, comment #1 was sarcasm.

Plan to Evict Tens of Thousands of Bedouin Palestinians Hits Roadblock

Dec. 12. Netanyahu's government has decided to drop the current draft of a controversial bill to drag 30,000 to 70,000 Bedouin living in the Negev into already recognized villages. The so-called Prawer Plan has met a lot of opposition internationally. Supposedly the reason is that the government has discovered that the Bedouin leaders have not agreed to the plan.

AIPAC Comes Up Short Again - No New Iran Sanctions

Dec. 12. The National Iranian American Council put out this announcement

"I've just learned from my contacts on Capitol Hill: plans for Eric Cantor to pass a House resolution bashing the Iran deal have been DEFEATED! And Mark Kirk's attempt to pass new Senate sanctions next week appears all but certain to be headed for a similar defeat. Just a week ago, many in Washington said it was inevitable that these measures would advance. AIPAC came to town this week to ensure the Senate would pass new sanctions before the year's end. And House leadership was all set to endorse new sanctions by the end of the week.

Yet through the intensive efforts of the White House, NIAC, and the pro-peace groups we work with, we beat those desperately pushing for sanctions to kill diplomacy in the House, and are on track to stop pro-war forces in the Senate.

This is an amazing victory to cap off an amazing year.

There is of course more work to be done to get a final deal that takes war and sanctions off the table for good, and to ensure human rights is properly addressed. But for now, thank you to everyone who took action alerts, signed petitions, and have supported NIAC to help bring Iranians and Americans closer than ever to a brighter, more peaceful future.

Best,

Jamal Abdi
Policy Director"

Child Could Face Life Term for Throwing Stones at Soldiers

Oct. 30. A fifteen year old has been detained since March. His name is Mohammad Mahdi Suleiman. According to the International Middle East Media Center the "Israeli Prosecution said it intends to ask for the highest penalty that could reach up to a life in prison, the Wa’ed Society for Detainees has reported."

Detainee Sentenced to Life Plus 60 Years

Oct. 30. The International Middle East Media Center reports that Hussein Ali Qawasma was sentenced to life plus 60 years. Prosecutors said "he planned to kidnap Israeli soldiers in an attempt to conduct a prisoner-swap". The article did not mention if he in fact did attack or kidnap someone.

Nine Year Old Testifies to Congress about Drone That Destroyed Her Grandmother

October 30. Only a few Democrats attended the hearing called by Congressman Allan Grayson of Florida, but for the first time the U.S. Congress officially heard testimony from a survivor of a family killed by a U.S. drone strike. Nabila Rehman, 9, told how the drone blew her grandmother to pieces and showed them a drawing she made of the murder. The article about this in "The Hindu" of India says the family lawyer was not allowed by the Obama Administration to come into the country even though he had no such problem before 2011. It also states that a supposed $60 million fund to compensate victims of drone strikes is news to people in Pakistan as none of them have received a penny.

Why was the Government Looking at 20 Year Old Citizenship Applications?

Ramea Odeh, 66 year old Associate Director of the Arab American Action Network, was arrested in a town near Chicago by Homeland Security on chrages of falsifying her citizenship application 20 years ago. The indictment claims she illegally witheld information about her convictions by Israeli authorities for acts 40 years ago.

Here's video of a TSVN interview with renowned Palestinian-American activist Ali Abunimah about the matter.

According to Electronic Intifada Odeh had been public about her arrest and ten years in an Israeli prison. She had even appeared in a documentary film.

Comment1: Is it routine for Homeland Security to comb 20 year old citizenship applications looking for fraud?

Palestinian Child Injured By Settlers In Nablus

Oct. 23. Settlers in the Nablus area broke into a number of homes and injured a little girl.

Yeshiva U. Pres Sits Calmly as Adelson Proposes to Nuke Tehran

Oct. 22. New York City. Mondoweiss posted a video showing Sheldon Adelson speaking a Yeshiva University proposing that the U.S. use a missile to detonate a nuclear bomb in an Iranian "desert" and tell Iran if it didn't roll back it's "nuclear program" the U.S. would shoot one into Tehran.

Here's the video. Adelson's proposal comes at about 5:30 into it. The president of Yeshiva University, Richard Joel, sat by Adelson along with the "celebrity" rabbi Shmuley Boteach. Neither of them batted an eye.

Commment: The population of Tehran is 7.8 million. Depending on the bomb used Adelson could be proposing to kill more people with one bomb than the number of Jews who were killed in the Holocuast. The Yeshiva President and Rabbi Boteach sit by calmly as this lunatic proposes a genocide. Why do they listen to him without retching? Either because they agree this proposal has some merit or because Adelson has billions of dollars. As Fox News says, "You decide".

Comment2: The hall was filled with people but I'd guess only a few dozen applauded. The students know better than their "teachers".

Lowell Weicker, Former CT Senator and Governor, Calls Israeli Wall an "Abomination"

October 20. Old Lyme, CT. He says his voting record in the Senate was rated 100% pro-Israel, but today Lowell Weicker, former CT Senator and Governor spoke at the Tree of Life conference of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. The conference is dedicated to educating about the injustices done to Palestinians.

There Weicker called the Israel "Wall" an "abominiation" and said "Instead of insisting that Israel get to the business of peace in short order the United States fuels indifference to Palestinian suffering by continuing a steady flow of military and economic aid to Israel as if they were the sole aggrieved party in the present standoff."

As of Oct. 21 Complete Blockade of Yarmouk Camp Now 98 Days Old

Oct. 21. Almost 100 days ago the partial siege of Syria's Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp became a full scale blockade. A group of European institutions has issued a statement of concern over the "catastrophic situation". Democracy Now! reports that Muslim clerics are giving permission to people in the camp to eat dogs, and donkeys to survive starvation.

Here's a TSVN video interview about the situation in September

Malala Yousafzai tells Obama drones are 'fueling terrorism'

Oct. 16 President Obama thought he was just getting reflective glory from brave Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai, but he also got an earful. At the meeting with Obama and the First Lady she brought up the little matter of drones and told him his drone strikes were creating more enemies than he was eliminating. In a statment she released after the meeting she said "I also expressed my concerns that drone attacks are fueling terrorism. Innocent victims are killed in these acts, and they lead to resentment among the Pakistani people. If we refocus efforts on education it will make a big impact."

No word if the president reacted to that statement by the almost youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Veolia Dumps Its Bus Lines in the Occupied Territories

Sept. 30. After a six year campaign the French firm Veolia sold off its share of ownership in the bus lines that run in the segregated West Bank. IMEMC reports Veolia remains a target of the boycott and divestment campaigners, however, as the main owner/operator of the Tovlan Landfill, and the provider of wastewater services to the illegal Israeli settlement Modi’in Ilit.

of Gamal Abdul Nasser

Sept. 29. According to the International Middle East Media Center, Israeli soldiers attacked Palestinian journalist, Sabreen Thiab, and took her to a police station to interrogate her for carrying a picture of late Egyptian President, Jamal Abdel Nasser.

Jimmy Carter Says Attack without UN Approval Illegal

Former President Jimmy Carter released a statement that in part said, "A punitive military response without a U.N. Security Council mandate or broad support from NATO and the Arab League would be illegal under international law and unlikely to alter the course of the war

One Democratic Member of Congress Breaks from the Pack
Won't Support Syria Attack

Aug. 29 Rep. Allen Grayson of the Orlando, Florida area is the first Democrat to break with the Obama Administration on Syria. He says that the "undeniable" evidence of a Assad government attack is in fact somewhat shaky. He says the Obama case is "flatly false".

New York Times Features Op-Ed Advocating Trashing Constitution over Syria

Aug. 28. The Times today published an op-ed piece from a political science professor named Ian Hurd saying that an attack on Syria would be illegal, but that the U.S. should do it anyway on "humanitarian" grounds.

Comment: This is a staggering call for injustice and the Times should be shamed for printing it. 1) There is a document called the U.S. Constitution not mentioned in the article that requires that war only take place if approved by Congress. Any U.S. official who violates the Constitution in this manner is committing a high crime, 2) no impartial body has yet found that there was a chemical attack in Syria or that Assad forces were responsible, 3) only the U.N Security Council can approve acts of force and Hurd recognizes that is not coming 4) the United States is responsible for the illegal killing of some one million Iraqi through sanctions, with an estimated 500,000 children be part of the toll. It is the last country on earth to go into high moral dudgeon over other massacres 5) the U.S. wink that is allowing al-Qaeda forces to enter Syria has been a disaster, adding a mad sectarian dimension to the conflict 6) The Kosovo precedent is bogus. The U.S. got permission to intervene from NATO, that is from itself 7) Governments can go to the Hague and get indictments against any persons suspected of committing war crimes. 8) the U.S. did a lot of talking about the humanitarian reasons behind the invasion of Iraq. Take a look at how well things are working there, 1,000 killed just last month?

President "Orders Up" Legal Justification for Strike on Syria
How Can it Be Legal?

Aug. 27. CBS Evening News says there is no debate in the Adminstration about the need to launch a military strike on Syria because of its alleged use of chemicals. It says the president is "ordering up" a legal justification for an attack.

Comment: Sec. of State Kerry says he can't get the pictures of the dead Syrian children out of his head. That's odd. He had no trouble getting the pictures of the 500,000 children the U.S. killed in Iraq by sanctions out of his head. They never troubled him for a moment.

Comment2: Of course an attack would be entirely lawless. There hasn't been any impartial report by UN inspectors or any other group that ties the Syrian government to the chemical attacks. Even if such a report came out there has (and no doubt will not be) any U.S. request that the U.N. Security Council take action or for a U.S. Declaration of War. Libya was a precedent. The president thinks the president can go to war whenever he wants. Legal justifications are just "ordered up" like a hamburger at MacDonalds.

Comment3: Watched CBS and NBC national news. It's grotesque how corporate news will lose all of its critical facilities once the Commander in Chief starts the drum beats for war.

Comment4: Of course, this is not to excuse Assad's forces one bit for what is likely a war crime or Russia, Iran and Hezbollah for assisting him.

Comment5: And yesterday Foreign Policy magazine published a sensational article showing how the Reagan Administration assisted Saddam Hussein's war against Iran in the 1980's even though it knew he was using poison gas against Iranian troops and Iranian Kurds.

Comment6: And if the Senator Kerry recalls just last week the Egyptian (U.S.-armed) military extinguished the lives of 1,000 Egyptians. True, most were adults, but do the the images of those corpses cause him any discomfort?

Believable Charges that Assad's Forces Used Chemicals

Aug. 24. Multiple videos and a report from Doctors Without Borders raise suspicion that chemicals sickened thousands and killed hundreds in Syria. The Assad government hotly disputes that it was involved.

Comment: The usual suspects calling themselves the "international community" are demanding direct U.S. military strikes against Syria. Who is this international community? Are Russia, China, or any of the countries of Latin America calling for blood?

Comment2: What about that tissue of parchment that the president continues to tear up, the U.S. Constitution? Will there be a Declaration of War? Will the matter be brought to the U.N. Security Council, the only international body that international law gives the power to launch war? Or will Obama get together will a gaggle of monarchies and bootlicking dependencies and call it a mandate? Here's an article that reflects on this though it seems to ask Obama to go and get the approval of Congress.

Mubarak to Be Freed, al-Baradei Charged with Treason - the Counter-revolution Continues

Aug. 22. Ex-Dictator Hosni Mubarak is to freed from prison after Egyptian prosecutors said they would not appeal a judges ruling to that effect. At the same time Mohammed ElBaradei who quit his post as Vice-President under the new regime is due in court Sept. 19 to face charges of treason. The charge against him is being brought by Sayed Ateeq, head of the criminal law department at Helwan University. Reportedly ElBaradei has gone to Austria.

Comment1: Can it be at all clearer that el-Sissi is destroying the revolution? ElBaradei and the liberals shamefully joined the el-Sissi coup, but at least was restored to sanity and quit being a figleaf for the new dictator.

Comment2. Mubarak is supposedly to be put under house arrest. Here's a 2011 cartoon by Latuff with his views on Mubarak's last "house arrest".

Comment3. Washington Post reports Mubarak has been freed.

36 Egyptian Prisoners Die from Tear Gas.
Can We Believe the Regime's Story?

Aug. 20. The authorities admit that 36 prisoners died when tear gas was thrown into a van carrying them. The Ministry of the Interior claims police were trying to rescue one of their own who had been taken hostage (or had been badly beaten in another account) by the prisoners.

Comment: How can we believe the regime's account? Would they really have put one policeman into a van of 36 apparently unshackled prisoners? If they did throw the gas in the sealed van how did the officer survive? Why is there no mention that any of the prisoners in the van survived? If the police were intent on rescue wouldn't they have thrown in the gas and opened the door to get at the policeman?

The whole think reeks to high heaven.

Israel Fighting Hard for Aid to Continue to Egyptian Generals

Aug. 17. No surprise. According to the "Times of Israel" Egypt's el-Sissi has "cultivated close ties to Israel during his tenure as head of military intelligence in Egypt". So when Rand Paul wanted Congress to enforce U.S. law and cut off aid to Egypt AIPAC (the leading group in the Israel lobby) went to work and got Congress to vote "no".

Comment1: Israeli whistles and the Senators fall in line. Not since the Praetorian Guard of the Roman Empire has a group of enforcers had some much influence in the halls of power.

Comment2: El-Sissi, Israel and the U.S. could very well crush the MB for a while. But what if al-Qaeda takes over the field from the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and attacks U.S.interests in Egypt. Will Obama show outrage and say he had no idea this could ever happen.

Over 500 Dead in Egypt Violence

Aug. 15 According to Fox News over 500 people have been killed in the latest Egypt violence.

Mohammed ELBaradei, Nobel Peace Prize winner who took the post of Interim Vice President in the al-Sisi government has resigned in protest.

Despite so-called "condemnations" of violence U.S. military aid continues to flow to the Egyptian military regime.

Comment1: It took el-Baradei three massacres to come to his senses.

Hezbollah Says It Knew in Advance Where Israeli Troops Would Attack Lebanon

Aug. 14. Reuters reports the head of Hezbollah, Sayyed Nasrallah claimed that his forces repelled an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon with advance knowledge of where the attacks was coming from. He denied Israeli claims that the soldiers has stepped on mines that had been left over from an earlier Israeli attack.

Egyptian Police Storm Pro-Morsi Camps - Dead and Injured

Aug. 14 Live fire and tear gas were used to bust up to large Pro-Morsi camps according to the Egyptian news site Madrmasr. "Several media outlets have advised citizens to form popular committees to protect their properties." The Egyptian Independent tweets "We are receiving many live pictures from our reporters in hospitals, but too graphic to tweet" Tweeter Nahla Nesbah says Islamists are attacking churches in retaliation.

Comment: The Pro-Morsi Islamists appear not to have made efforts to reach out to elements of the Left and unions would might oppose the military regime. Attacks on the Coptic churches are just plain stupid.

Are the Spymasters Looking at Every Google Search?

August 6. The Atlantic reports that a Long Island family got a visit from six armed men waving badges saying they were from a "Joint Terrorism Task Force". It seems that members of the family had done google seraches and one person had looked up "pressure cookers" and another "backpacks". Michele Catalano said her family agreed to let their house searched. They went through it briefly. They didn't examine the homes computers. Then they left. "They mentioned that they do this about 100 times a week."

Comment: The Atlantic article says that Suffolk County police claim they were alerted to the supposedly suspicious google searches by the the company the husband worked for. True or cover story?

Obama Administration Ends Investigation into "Container Massacre" and Says Nothing

August 6. Pro-Publica reports that an investigation into the 2001 massacre of Taliban Afghan prisoners has come to a halt. Obama administration spokeswoman says that "Americans weren't involved", but will say nothing more about the investigation.

Comment: Hundreds or thousands were killed when warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum's forces put Taliban prisoners in shipping containers without food or water or even enough air. A State Department memo said 2,000 to 3,000 people had been captured. Dostum was a major commander in the pro-Soviet Afghan military forces during the 1980's. He reinvented himself in the 1990's and helped found the Northern Alliance which the U.S. used as its ground forces in 2001. He is currently Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Afghan National Army though is said to be "out of favor" with Washington. Out of favor he may be in the latest political shenanigans, but that doesn't mean Obama's people want him embarrassed for a little matter like a major massacre done by his troops.

Scores Killed by Security Forces in Egypt

July 27. A Reuters reporter has counted 36 bodies in one morgue. The Muslim Brotherhood claims 70 dead, Al Jazeera in Egypt says 120 killed.

Objection to Israeli Water Meter on Human Rights Grounds in UK Gets Results

June 27. The Daily Mail reports, "Caroline and Edmond O'Reilly asked Southern Water to replace the device because the manufacturers, Arad Technologies, are accused of 'profiteering' in the West Bank." The company agreed. Article says this opens the door to thousands of replacements

They Will Not Go Into the Streets Friday for the Benefit of the New Mubarak

July 25. In a statement today the Revolutionary Socialist Party of Egypt opposed the call from the Egyptian military regime for a massive rally of support for a "war against terror" against the Muslim Brotherhood.

Comment: The Revolutionary Socialists are standing against the mad wave of support by Egyptian liberals and seculars for the military coup. To his disgrace Nobel Peace Prize winner el-Baradei is now Vice-President of the regime that massacred MB who were in a peaceful sit-in. It appears the military is preparing a huge decapitation strike against the MB. And then the next step will be attacks on the unions, Left parties, popular groups, etc.

White House Angry that Yemeni Journalist Released

July 25. On Democracy Now! this morning an angry Jeremy Scahill revealed that the White House continues to slander Abdulelah Haider Shaye, the Yemeni journalist, and is unhappy that he has been released from prison. Shaye had investigate the massacre of three dozen women and children at al-Majalah. Scahill says White House refuses to provide any evidence that Shaye is in any way part of al-Qaeda. The Obama Administration says he was judged guilty of a crime, but the trial is widely regarded by "every human rights organization" in the world as being a sham, according to Scahill.

Paper Exposes Mugabe's Israel Connection

July 24. Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's three decade president/tyrant, poses as anti-imperialist, but the Jewish paper, "The Forward" exposes his Israeli connection. Robert Goldiner starts his piece "Zimbabwe’s strongman Robert Mugabe has succeeded in staying in office for 33 years with a potent mix of populism and violence — and he may have an Israeli company to thank if he extends his rule one more time.

Israeli Right Gets Its Way on Peace Talks

July 23. An Israeli website explains that the new peace talks came about only after Abbas agreed to drop all pre-conditions. The demand for a halt to a stream of new Israeli settlements while the talks were underway is now just one for the history books.

Has Yemini Journalist Trageted by Obama Been Freed?

July 23 11:30a.m. So tweets Jeremy Scahill @jeremyscahill. The respected Yemini journalist Abdulelah Haider Shaye has been jailed on the specific request of President Obama. Because he interviewed Yemini al-Qaeda figures he supposedly was connected with them. However, his reporting of the mass killing of 30 women and children in Majalla was what really got him in trouble.

Background to the case on McClatchy. and here

Court Will Let Racist Rabbi to Run for Israel Chief Rabbi

July 23. The Israeli Supreme Court ruled against a lawsuit trying to deny Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu the chance to run for Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel. He's made some hair-raising statments against Arabs and non-Jews generally which on the face of it violate Israeli anti-racism laws ...but he says their were only "Jewish legal rulings" and so is never prosecuted.

Scroll down to July 3 for more on this story.

Comment: We are supposed to believe that "Jewish legal rulings" only affect things in some other universe. Baruch Goldstein, the mass murderer in Hebron, and Yigal Amir, the assassin of Prime Minister Rabin, give the lie to that.

Important Israeli Columnist Comes Out for Boycott of Israeli Goods

July 14. Today Gideon Levy who writes for Ha'aretz came out in his column for a boycott of Israel, not just for settlement products, but for a complete boycott.

" The distinction between products from the occupation and Israeli products is an artificial creation. It’s not the settlers who are the primary culprits but rather those who cultivate their existence. All of Israel is immersed in the settlement enterprise, so all of Israel must take responsibility for it and pay the price for it. "

Comment: The Israeli Knesset has tried to make it illegal to call for a boycott of Israeli goods. No doubt they will go after Levy for his brave stand in the "only democracy in the Middle East".

Bloodbath in Cairo

June 8. Democracy Now! reports that over 40 pro-Morsi supporters were killed as they gathered near a building where Mohammed Morsi is suspected of being held. This is a military that killed over 20 in Maspero, allowed "virginity tests", tortured others and committed many, many abuses.

The new Egyptian military-appointed president has called for an investigation

Electronic Intifada reports that the Egyptian regime is deporting Palestinians trying to return to Gaza.

Comment: Revolutionaries cannot trust or obey this military. It's officers control enormous amounts of Egyptian property and are conniving with the U.S. empire to restore what they had with Mubarak. The rebels need to establish committees for defense that will develop into a new military.

Morsi Out...RS Warns "Stay in the Streets"

July 3. The Egyptian military has responded to the tens of millions in the Egyptian streets, by ousting President Mohammed Mors.

As'ad AbuKhalil (no friend of the Brotherhood)calls it a "reactionary coup" and warns about General Sisi who he says has been in charge of "Egyptian-Israeli military-intelligence cooperation".

The Revolutionary Socialists (RS) call for "direct democracy", the formation of popular committees and direct rule from the people.

"Radical Racist" May Become Israeli Chief Rabbi

July 3. The next Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel may be Shmuel Eliyahu, the rabbi of Safed who preaches against renting to Arabs, who the rabbi who "incites against having sexual relations with Arabs" and on and on. In He was nominated by the Jewish Home party, a member of the governing coalition. In Israel there are two Chief Rabbis, the Sephardic who leads the observant Jews from North Africa and the Middle East and the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi who leads observant Israeli's from Europe.

Read this blistering denunciation of the prospect in the Israeli paper Ha'aretz by Sefi Rachlevsky. He calls for the party that proposes Eliyahu's elevation to be thrown out of the ruling coalition.

Israel hasn't been having a lot of luck with its public officials lately, a former president in jail for rape, former Prime Minister Olmert has been put on trial for corruption, and the current Israeli Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona has been arrested because he is suspected of pocketing hundreds of thousands of shekels

Morsi Refuses to Make Concessions

July 3. Embattled Egyptian President Morsi took to the air waves yesterday to speak to the Egyptian people. He made no concessions. He did not respond to the initiative of several parties seeking to have new elections and a coalition government. He praised the military despite its threat to force a solution.

The massive crowds at this point seem very friendly to the army. An often heard chant is "The army and the people are one hand". But there is healthy distrust in some circles. They remember the period when Mubarak left and the army officers ruled and arrested thousands and put them on military trials. An anti-military march took place in Cairo led by the April 6 Youth Movement, Strong Egypt Party, the Revolutionary Socialists and other revolutionary coalitions..

"Millions" of Egyptians Call for Morsi to Resign

June 30. The Reuters headline says it all: "Millions flood Egypt's streets to demand Mursi quit"

In New York City a thousand supporters of revolution demonstrated outside the Egyptian mission.

Comment 1: The news is not all good. Reportedly in Egypt a section of the crowd is calling for the military to step in!

Cleared for a Gitmo Release That Never Came, He Killed Himself

June 29. A U.S. military report concludes that Adnan Farhan Abdul Latif committed suicide with pills at Guantanamo last year. He had be recommended for release in 2010 to a place that could treat his mental illness. The New York Times said "the military said he had confessed under interrogation early in his capture to having gone to help the Taliban fight the Northern Alliance". Unclear if he ever reached any Taliban unit. He was at Guantanamo for 11 years.

Lynne Stewart Denied Compassionate Release by Federal Bureau of Prisons Director

June 25th. Lynne Stewart’ husband Ralph Poynter was informed by Lynne this morning that she received a three-paragraph letter from Kathleen Kenney, General Counsel for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington, D.C.:

According to her defense committee "Compassionate Release" has been denied on the grounds that Lynne’s “health is improving.”

This claim is at once cynical and false. Lynne Stewart’s cancer continues to spread in her lungs. She remains in isolation as her white blood cell count remains so low that she is at risk for generalized infection. She weakens daily.

Goal Met - Over 100,000 Petition the President to Give Snowden Amnesty

June 22. In little over a week 100,000 registered citizens petitioned President Obama to immediately pardon Edward Snowden, the man who told Glen Greenwald about government spying on virtually all citizen internet postings. By the White House rules there will have to be some written response to the petition.

Comment: Of course, by sending out a warrant for Snowden's arrest Obama has given his real response. Yet the swift message by 100,000 Americans shows anger at government snooping and peeping.

Palestinian children tortured, used as shields by Israel: U.N

June 21. "Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, captured by Israel in the 1967 war, are routinely denied registration of their birth and access to health care, decent schools and clean water, the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child said." This from a Reuters article on the UN report.

Robert Fisk Says Iran Will Send 4,000 to Help Assad

June 17. Writing in the Independent (UK) longtime war correspondent Robert Fisk predicts Iran will send 4,000 troops to Syria to assist the Assad regime. He says Obama has fully joined in a Sunni war against the Shia even though lead Sunni fighters in Syria are al-Qaeda.

Comment1: Hey, what called he do? Bill Clinton said he'd be a "wuss" if he didn't send arms diretly to the Syrian rebels.

Comment2: The New York Times finally noted what we've been saying. The White House has said it has evidence of chemicals in Syria causing 100-150 deaths, but hasn't provided the public with any evidence.

Taksim Group Says Hundreds Hurt When Park Emptied

June 16. According to to the Turkish newspaepr Hurriyet Daily News the group that coordinates the Gezi Park protest says hundreds were injured as the police drove people out of Gezi Park yesterday. Some of what was done was described in this article.

After ending the park occupation Prime Minister Erdogan held a monster demonstration where hundreds of thousands of his supporters heard his speech. Reading about it on Twitter as it was delivered Erdogan took a hard line, claimed the protesters were looters and even repeated a lie that they had Jounalist Ilhan Tanir tweeted "PM Erdogan made it very clear that the authorities will go after those who provoked protests, whether over social media,or streets w/cameras"

Protest Continues

Reporting via Twitter @VOT99 claims protesters are not cowed and that there is lots of protests and police violence against protests across Turkey.

The rally listening to Erdogan speech was enormous, but many claimed that the government required public employees to attend the speech.

Turkish PM Sets Cops on Protest. Gas and Water Cannons Used to Empty Gezi Park

June 15. Taking his cue from the way U.S. authorities ended the occupations of Occupy Wall Street, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan send police into Gezi Park and emptied it of protesters. Turkey's EU Minister has threatened to treat anyone who returns to the park as a "terrorist".

Supposedly Obama Dragged into Arming Syrian Rebels (Oh, Please!)

June 15. Big story in the New York Times today about how a reluctant Obama gave in to massive pressure to announce he would directly arm some Syrian rebel forces.

Comment - Give us a break. This is just the NYT spin to keep the most gullible liberals within the fold.

Comment1 - Why no story on the gullibility of the media, which does not ask the Obama Administration for proof that 100-150 Syrians (or any Syrians) were killed by chemical weapons. The White House declares it true, so it is? How about all the other White House stories of other administrations, Colin Powell and his mobile germ weapons factories, the supposed incubators of Kuwait emptied and taken to Iraq, fake attacks in the Gulf of Tonkin, etc.

Comment2 - Very good analyis in our Syria archive by Allan Woods about how we have to accept that the democratic rebellion in Syria has been defeated for now.

Comment3 - The Times article claims that Obama had to take action because he'd look like a fool for establishing a red line about chemical weapons. But he created that line himself. What would be so special about chemical weapons anyway in view of the butchery of the Assad regime? Isn't it more likely that the Administration is getting us into the war to help the Islamic "moderates" gradually because polls show Americans don't want involvement in the warfare in Syria?

Obama to Directly Send Weapons to Syria

After declaring that the Assad regime crossed a red line by using chemical weapons the Obama Administration announced it will send weapons directly to unnamed rebel factions in Syria.

Comment: The U.S. Constitution requires that Congress declare war, but once again this is being bypassed by the Napoleon in Chief

Comment2: The U.N. Charter allows a country to use force when attacked, but when was the U.S. attacked?

Comment3. As has been pointed out by As'ad AbuKhalil the corporate media pretends that the 93,000 deaths in Syria all have been Assad's responsibility even though a Qatar financed human rights group states that over 40,000 of the dead are Assad's men.

Comment4: Who do you think Obama will arm, the real revolutionaries in Syria who never asked for imperial intervention, or the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, the al-Qaeda lite. It's Reagan Afghanistan policy 2.0. Any day now we'll hear that "our" rebels are the equivalent of the U.S. founding fathers (or with Obama they'll be compared to Martin Luther King).

Comment5: Read carefully the full text about the chemical weapons. While claiming that the U.S. has the time and date for many incidents that chemicals were used not a single one is mentioned, nor is any chemical name mentioned.

Comment6: Of course, this only escalates the U.S. war against the Syrian regime. Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia surely didn't send it weapons without U.S. permission. Netanyahu must have a broad smile this morning. He's getting closer to his goal of an open war of "the West" against Syria-Iran-Hezbollah.

Haters Deface Grave Monuments in Jaffa

June 13. In another so-called "price tag" attack vandals defaced a Christian cemetary in Jaffa. Whenever Jewish fascists are angered by some Israeli government decision the mount a violent attack on some Palestinian target and declare it a "price tag". There have been 165 "price tag" attacks this year alone.

Jaffa in '48 Palestine was taken over by the Israeli government in 1950 and unified with Tel Aviv. The area is officially called Tel Aviv-Yafo.

Huge Anti-Draft Rally in New York City

June 9. Tens of thousands Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men demonstrated in New York City against Israeli government measures to force Israeli students at Yeshivas (Orthodox schools for study of Torah) to be subject to the draft. One estimate is 20,000 to 30,000 were at the rally. The ultra-orthodox are anti-Zionist believing that God forbids Jews from taking over the Land of Israel until the time of the Messiah. At most rallies for Palestinian rights you will often find 10 or 20 Ultra-Orthodox fiercely denouncing Israel.

Here's an article about the event in the Zionist Jewish paper "The Forward" Take a few moments to look at the video. It was a massive rally.

Demonstrations Sweep Across Turkey

June 2. After police tear gassed hundreds of demonstrators opposing plans to turn a park into a mosque demonstrations swept across Turkey in 90 locations. Demonstrators oppose the growing Islamic support of the government. This video claims police have killed several people.

Vivid video here from Washington Post Also, many of the comments appear to be from Turkey and are quite interesting.

Al-Arabiya claims Prime Minister Erdogan called Twitter a menace. "“There is now a menace which is called Twitter,” Erdogan said. “The best examples of lies can be found there. To me, social media is the worst menace to society.”

Campaign to Bring Justice to Family of Turkish-American Murdered on Mavi Marmara

The U.S. Campaign to End the Occupation is organizing an effort to get the president to demand justice for the family of Furkan Dugan who was killed by Israeli commandos on the Mavi Marmara three years ago.

Did McCain Pose with Kidnappers?

Senator McCain, who wants full military help for the rebels in Syria, went from Turkey across the border into Syria in what was billed as a "surpise visit". One picutre of McCain with some rebels caused comment, because a Lebanese reporter recognized two of the rebels. On May 29 Al-Akbar printed an article saying these rebels were involved with a mass kidnapping of Lebanese pilgrims in Syria last year. McCain's spokesperson said, "“It would be ludicrous to suggest that the senator in any way condones the kidnapping of Lebanese Shia pilgrims or has any communication with those responsible. Senator McCain condemns such heinous actions in the strongest possible terms"

"Arabs with Altitude" Scale Everest - Unfurl Palestinian Flag

May 25. Ynet news reports that a group of Arabs including a Palestinian climbed to the top of Mt. Everest and unfurled a Palestinian flag. They dedicated the act to the prisoners in Israeli prisons. Raed Zidan was born in Kuwait of Palestinian parents who came from a village near Qalqilya. The group incldued a Saudi woman, also a first.

Israel Has Highest Poverty Rate of 34 Developed Nations

May 15. Worse than the U.S., worse than bank-devastated Greece and Spain, worse than Mexico. Israel's 21% poverty rate is the worst of all the 34 developed nations in the OECD. It has achieved this dubious distinction for the first time this year hitting the bottom slightly lower than Mexico.

And this is with billions every year coming gratis from the U.S. and Europe. The Israeli 1% mastered the trick of ripping up the social safety net and grabbing for themselves.

Comment: A couple of years ago 400,000 demonstrated in the streets against lack of housing and inequality. They got nothing out it. They would not ally with those even poorer in the apartheid state...the Palestinians.

Gaza's Ark Purchased

May 14. On the 65th anniversary of the Nakba a boat has been purchased that will be transformed into "Gaza's Ark", a trading ship Palestinians in Gaza hope will break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. See the Gaza's Ark website for details.

Israeli Professor Calls for Murder of Steven Hawking

Bradley Burston writing in Ha'aretz calls attention to a professor at the University of Haifa who has called for Steven Hawkings death by urging that the "people of Israel" give him a ride on the Achille Lauro. The Achille Lauro was hijacked by a group of Palestinians in 1985 and a wheelchair bound passenger was murdered. This professor was angered by the world famous physicist's positive response to a call to cancel plans to attend a Jerusalem conference. Burston also notes other less threatening attacks on Jewish-Americans Dustin Hoffman and Peter Beinart by other ultra-right wing Jews.

Unbelievable? See the screenshot of this professor Plaut's blog.

CNN Notes Report of 42 Syrian Soldiers Killed

CNN citing the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the death toll among Syrian soldiers was 42 with 100 people missing in the latest Israeli bombing attack.

Times Says Israeli Strike May Have Killed Hundreds of Syrian Soldiers...
Then Erases Paragraph from Article

May 5. Israeli bombs exploded all night in the outskirts of Damascus. The Israeli regime says the attack was on missiles the Syrians were sending to Hezbollah. The Syrian regime says the attack was ona a military research facility.

In reporting on the attack the New York Times first quoted Russian sources which were looking at Syrian social media and reported that hundreds of Syrian soldiers had been killed. Here's a screenshot of the article at about 10 a.m. By 10:40 that paragraph was gone from the article without explanation.

Comment: Did the NYT remove the paragraph to mask direct Israeli involvement in the war on the side of the rebels?

Hunger Striker Heart Rate Down to Critical Level

April 9. IMEMC Reports that hunger striker Samer Al Essawy's heart is only beating 30 beats per minute. On and off he's been on a hunger strike for 250 days. "He has refused any vitamin supplements, and is currently only taking water with some sugar. "

Update: The Israeli government gave in and will release Al Essawy in December and will allow him to live in the Jerusalem area.

NATO Air Strike Kills 11 Kids and "Senior" Terrorists

April 8. At least 11 children have reportedly been killed in a NATO airstrike in Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan. A spokesman for the Kunar governor said "security forces killed 20 Taliban in which 10 of them are very senior Taliban members"

Comment: They're always "senior" member of the Taliban, aren't they. They don't have names, just seniority.

Comment2: If the FBI had taken out ten kids when it killed John Dillinger do you think there might have been some public unhappiness?

State of Ohio Makes Record Buy of Apartheid Bonds

April 4. Even though the official Ohio unemployment rate is stuck in the 7% range for the past year the State of Ohio decided to send tens of millions of dollars overseas to buy State of Israel bonds. Some $42 million was used to buy the bonds of the apartheid state.

A staggering number of state governments, foundations and 1,700 labor union invest in Israel Bonds. Supposedly they're a "good investment".

Comment1: Of course, the bonds pay off. The U.S. government stands behind them. It lets U.S. cities go bankrupt while guaranteeing "white" superiority in Israel.

Comment2: In the state of CT there was a successful effort to get the state AFL-CIO to get rid of its Israel bonds a few years ago.

Comment3: At the end of the SW article about this there's a link to a petition asking Ohio to dump the bonds.

Israeli Soldier Refuses Service for the 8th Time

April 1. Ha'aretz reports Nathan Blank an Israeli ordered to military service is refusing for the 8th time. He's already served 100 days in prison. He's said he's willing to do servcie in the Magen David, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, but the military officer in charge refuses.

"Blank said he began thinking about refusing to serve during Operation Cast Lead in 2009.", according to the Israeli paper. The "operation" is better known as the Gaza Massacre in which 1,400 Palestinians were killed. Blank said "I don't want to go to the mental health officer." It's rather easy for an Israeli to get out of military service on "mental" grounds.

Father, Daughter Imprisoned Activists on "Dry" Hunger Strike in Bahrain

March 26. Abdulhadi and Zainab Al-Khawaja, outstanding Bahraini activists are both in Bahraini prisons. Abdulhadi is serving a life sentence. His daughter is in prison for "insulting" an official.

They are on a very dangerous "dry" hunger strike right now, no food no water, because the Bahraini government has stopped family visits. MECC has written a protest to Bahraini authorities and has contacted the CT media.

Here's coverage in the New York Times.

For information on contacting Bahrain via email click here see the top link in our archive. You'll find links to current articles there also.

Obama Gone, Israelis Tear Down Budding Village

March 24. The tent village that activists had built on West Bank land in what occupation authorities call "E1" has been torn down. It was built 5 days ago. Activists hoped Obama's visit would give it a bit of breathing room and were right. They got those five days. Earlier attempts to built a village called Bab al-Shams were destroyed after only a day or two.

Contrast this to Israeli settlers who bring in trailers to camp on Palestinian land. There may be a fuss for a few days in the liberal media, but the settlements are almost always allowed to stay and given army protection.

"I am a proud racist," said a Teenage Boy

March 24. An article in the Israeli paper Ha'aretz about how comman racism is among Israeli Jews. Here's a quote: "I am a proud racist," said a teenage boy at Jerusalem's Malha mall, draped in a Beitar Jerusalem scarf, shortly before last week's game against Maccabi Haifa. "The menorah of Beitar symbolizes the Jewish people. The menorah is holy, Jerusalem is holy, and we are holy. That is why no Arab may set foot [on the field] in Teddy Stadium. This is a team of Jews and only Jews."

Comment: Obama who blathered about racism in Jerusalem only did it only to curry favor with Zionists who only care about racism against Jews.

Author Barred from Libya "For Being Jewish"

March 23. The French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy has been barred from a trip to Libya "for being Jewish" according to the Independent (UK). He was to accompany former French Prime Minister Sarkozy, but he was forbidden to come to Libya because it was "feared his Jewish background would make him a target for attacks by Islamist militia." This is ironic because Lévy was a huge cheerleader for the French-U.S.-Italian air strikes and military aid to the rebellion that overthrew dictator Gaddafi. Al Qaeda loving Islamic forces have been influential in Libya ever since and some reportedly killed the U.S. ambassador there some months ago.

Comment1: Delicious irony, one might say.

Obama Gets Turkey to Drop Gaza Demand

March 22. Just before he left for Jordan Obama did another big favor for Israel. He got Turkey and Israel to repair their relations. According to the Turkish press the PM Netanyahu apologized "for any errors" in the attack on the Turkish ship, the Mavi Marmara and will pay compensation. Full relations are restored.

Turkish PM Erdogan had also demanded an end to the siege of Gaza, but the New York Times only stated that Netanyahu claimed that he had already removed some restrictions on things getting into Gaza.

Turkish government interest in Gaza appears to have waned. It's more interested in overthrowing the Assad regime in nearby Syria.

March 24. The Israeli site Ynet says the official apology amounted to one sentence. "The 30-minute call was made in a runway trailer at Ben-Gurion Airport, where Obama and Netanyahu huddled before the president boarded Air Force One for a flight to Jordan, US officials said. In an official statement, Netanyahu's office said: "In light of Israel's investigation into the incident, which pointed to a number of operational mistakes, the prime minister expressed Israel's apology to the Turkish people for any mistakes that might have led to the loss of life or injury." The site says that the Turkish group IHH which organized for the Mavi Marmara to be in the Freedom Flotilla is satisfied with the apology.

Comment: The "apology" was barely that. It wasn't written, it wasn't public and it regretted only "errors" in the operation, not the fact that the IDF attacked a peaceful ship, killed 9 people and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars. As if the pirate Blackbeard apologized for those of his men who cursed when they seized a ship.

Comment2: Netanyahu supposedly verbally agreed to compensation. What does that mean, just to the families whose men were killed? What about the injured? And what about all the property that was taken by the IDF commandos, computer, cash, credit cards? (Recall some commandos used the credit cards to buy beer). What about the boats that were seized and are probably still in Ashdod? Actually it's incredible that anyone would settle this thing with a phone call and not a written agreement.

Comment3: The backpeddling on the demand on Gaza is confirmed. In fact Israel has formally said it will shoot at Gaza boats going out past 3 miles from the shore as opposed to the theoretical 7 or 8 mile limit.

Obama Speaks Against Racism...Except Israeli Racism Against Blacks, Palestinians

March 22 The Times article is headlined "At Israeli Memorial Obama Speaks Out Against Racism". The video of his talk at Yad Vashem includes him saying, "This is our obligation not simply to bear witness, but to us in our time this means confronting bigotry and hatred in all its forms, racism, especially anti-Semitism. None of that has a place in the civilized world."

And then he said absolutely nothing about racism right now in Israel, the race riot against black Africans in Tel Aviv, the soccer fans who walked out when a Moslem member of their own football club scored a goal, and the thousand and one racist restrictions against Palestinians.

Obama Speech or Dershowitz Speech?

March 21, 2013. The speech could have been written by Abe Foxman or Alan Dershowitz, endless praise for Israel and their need for "security" and a tiny bit of hypocritcal sympathy for Palestinians.

There was one paragraph which did mention Palestinian and settler violence and military occupation.

The very next paragraph quotes Ariel Sharon sympathetically. He's the Israeli who has killed the most Palestinians in history. With only some exaggeration it's like expressing unhappiness with the Rape of Nanking and then quoting Emperor Hirohito.

Obama also demanded Hezbullah be declared a terrorist organization. Whatever the truth of that, but any measure Israeli government terrorism has claimed a hundred times more people.

Obama Using Netanyahu's Language on Iran

March 15. As Obama's visit to Israel draws closer the Israeli paper Ha'aretz reports that that Obama is using Israeli Prime Minister's way of talking about Iran. "Proof that the parties are moving closer could be seen in the Channel 2 interview: Obama used the term “red line,” which Netanyahu is so fond of, although he placed it farther off than the prime minister does. Obama also began defining the Iranian threat as attaining “nuclear capability,” not just attaining its first nuclear bomb. "

Comment: Iran becomes a target for the "crime" of "capability", which of course Obama and his IAEA stooges will define. A country without a single nuclear bomb will be called a "threat to the world" and when all that's left is rubble no one will be able to prove that there really was no danger.

Comment2: All those naive people who thought Hagel would make a difference explain what he's saying now on Iran.

Iraq War Expense More Than Estimated...Total Eventual Cost Over $6 Trillion

March 14. You might remember Joseph Stiglitz (economics Nobel Prize winner) wrote a book with Linda Blimes a few years ago saying the final cost of the Iraq war would be $3 trillion. It got some notice, but not much. Turns out the two were wrong. The war cost a more, a lot more. 30 experts at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University did a study and estimate the direct costs were $1.7 trillion and costs for veteran benefits were so far $490 billion, but would rise to $6 trillion over the next four decades.

Comment 1: The reports also says there were 134,000 Iraqi civilian deaths directly caused by the invasion. Read the summary of the Watson report. It includes a comment by a Bush era official Steven Bucci, who talked about a "positive" of the war. "It was really in Iraq that 'al Qaeda central' died," Bucci said. "They got waxed."

JVP Get 30,000 Messages Sent to Congress

March 8. Jewish Voice for Peace was able to organize its members and friends to send 30,000 messages to Congress, strong messages to combat AIPAC's new demands. Way to go.

Jewish Group Puts 100 Anti-AIPAC Ads in DC Train Stations

March 3. Jewish Voice for Peace has started an aggressive anti-AIPAC campaign, by renting ad space in DC train stations. AIPAC just held its annual conference and is loosening thousands of its people in Congress with this remarkable agenda 1) exempt Israel from the automatic budget cuts that went into effect on March 1 (sequestration); 2) pass a law giving Israel automatic support for an attack on Iran; 3) support Israeli settlement in the so-called E-1 section of the West Bank. JVP is asking people to call Congress. Click here for how.

Yale Profs ask Their Pension Fund
to Stop Making Money for Occupation

At the talk given by Omar Barghouti at Yale it was revealed that 20 Yale professors had joined the campaign to ask TIAA-CREF to get rid of stock in companies benefitting from the occupation. Here is professor David Bromwich saying why he join in.

Argentine Foreign Minister Blasts Israeli Government

According to the Israeli press Argentina's Foreign Minister Hector Timerman gave an "exceptionally harsh dressing down of Israel's ambassador Dorit Shavit" in response to Israel's rebuke of the Argentinian ambassador in Tel Aviv. Argentina has announced that it was setting up a "truth-telling" commission with Iran to try to get to the bottom of the bombing of the Buenos Aires Jewish center in 1994. Timerman was furious with Israel and said "Israel doesn't speak in the name of the Jewish people."

Timerman's father is the late Jacabo Timerman, a Argentianin Jew and a Zionist, who when he was publisher of Buenos Aires most important paper was imprisoned and tortured by the neo-Nazi junta running Argentina in the mid-'90's. For more on his read the second article in this archive.

Successful Talks at Brooklyn College

Feb. 8. Omar Barghouti and Judith Butler did get to give their talks at Brooklyn College. Here's the Mondoweiss account. About 200 attended and the crowd was overwhelmingly in support of the speakers. This is in Brooklyn with some of the largest concentrations of Zionist extremists in the world.

Here's the full video of the talk at Yale University.

New York Times report about the event

In Ha'aretz they realized that Dershowitz and the politicians caused them a fiasco.

Comment: The group at Yale was also very supportive of the speakers. The times are a' changing. About ten years ago MECC brought Norman Finkelstein to speak at Yale. About 1/4 of the crowd was openly hostile even though he wasn't calling for BDS. He was just telling the truth about Israel.

Comment2: Read this unintentionally hilarious whining by Alan Dershowitz explaining how he only did the protest to back up professors who might be intimidated by human rights activits.

Barghouti BDS Talk Will Go on at Brooklyn College Tonight

Feb. 7. Despite efforts by NYC politicians to threaten Brooklyn College with loss of funding the college president Karen Gould is standing up for academic freedom. She received support from the AFT union of professors at the college, the New York Times and even Mayor Bloomberg. He spoke at Yale University last night as was warmly received. He spoke with Yale professor David Bromwich and Jewish Voice for Peace Executive Director Rebecca Vilkommerson. The panel was sponsored by the Yale chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine and was not cosponsored by any Yale department (unlike the situation at Brooklyn College). Here are three videos of Omar Barghouti speaking at Yale. More coming.

BDS in 30 Seconds

"You Target Their Complicity, You Don't Need Political Tests"

Colonizing the Mind

Comment: Channeling Netanyahu and Benny Morris this comment was made about the BDS talk. “We’re talking about the potential for a second Holocaust here,” said Assemblyman Alan Maisel of Brooklyn. Maisel is a state assemblyman who represents a section of Brooklyn hosting Floyd Bennett Field and is apparently as dumb as the asphalt that covers it.

Israeli Government Has Sour Grapes over Yale Study

Feb. 6 A study of Palestinian textbooks led by a Yale professor and partially funded by the U.S. government refuted the charge that they are filled with hate against Jews and Israelis. However, the Yale Daily News reports that the Israeli government is unhappy. The head of the project was Yale School of Medicine psychiatrist Bruce Wexler. The article notes "the Israeli Ministry of Education accused the report of extreme bias." Wexler says the Israeli government is "politically motivated".

According to the U.S. Jewish community paper "The Forward" the study was was done over several years. It was "carried out and overseen by a team of American, Israeli, Palestinian and international education experts. It was commissioned by the Council of Religious Institutions of the Holy Land, a consortium of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian leaders in Israel, and received $590,000 in funding from the U.S. State Department."

Zionist Mouthpiece, Brooklyn Pols Try to Sink Palestinian Talk

Feb. 3. More than the usual nasties are raising a fuss against a talk in Brooklyn by internationally renowned philosopher Judith Butler and Palestinian human rights activist Omar Barghouti. The infamous Alan Dershowitz of Harvard Law and Dov Hikind, former Kahane supporter and current Brooklyn State Assemblyman, are leading the charge to scuttle the talks, but they have been joined by several mayoral candidates.

The event is scheduled to take place Thurs. Feb.7 at Brooklyn College and is sponsored by the Political Science Department.

Glenn Greenwald reports on developments.

Here's a petition to join in support of the meeting. All you have to do is send an email

Victim Shown Beaten by Police on Video Claims They Didn't Do it - Egypt

Feb. 3. Half a million people have seen the video shows a naked man being beaten by police in Tahrir Square during the latest mass rallies of Egypts continuing revolution. According to Al Akhbar English "State television aired overnight a recording of Saber, lying on bed in a police hospital, giving his account of the incident, in which he blamed protesters for stripping and robbing him." The article also mentions "Egypt's prosecutors' office has released a statement saying Saber denied that police had hit him."

Comment: This man arrested an lying in a hospital bed couldn't be under any kind of threat, could he?

MECC Joins Palestine Solidarity Statement for Idle No More

The Middle East Crisis Committee, the 30 year old parent organization of "The Struggle" has joined on to this Palestinian led support statement for "Idle No More", the Indian activist statment in Canada. The statement is here.

Olmert Says Netanyahu "Wasted" Money Preparing for Iran Attack

January 13. In a falling out between war criminals former Israeli Prime Minister Olmert says the current Israeli PM "wasted" $3 billion in war games and such to prepare for an attack on Iran.

Comment: Not that Olmert said an unprovoked aggression would be wrong.

Saudi Executioner Beheads Prisoner

January 10. International appeals failed to prevent this killing. As'ad AbuKhalil reports: "A Sri Lankan woman who was employed as a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia was beheaded by the Saudi authorities on Wednesday after she was accused of murdering an infant in her charge and then sentenced to death in a case that the Sri Lankan government and human rights groups said was flawed. The Saudi Interior Ministry announced in a brief statement released by the official Saudi news agency that the woman, Rizana Nafeek, had been executed. It said she strangled the infant because of differences between her and the baby’s mother. She was detained and interrogated and was sentenced after trial, the Saudi ministry reported. Sri Lanka’s Ministry of External Affairs said Wednesday in a statement on its Web site that Ms. Nafeek had been beheaded. She had been on the job for only six weeks before the accusation was made against her in 2005."

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa sent an appeal to King Abdullah on January 6, 2013, requesting a stay of the execution until a settlement can be reached between the baby’s family and a Saudi reconciliation committee.

Nafeek was found guilty of murdering a baby in her care when she was 17 years old. Human Rights Watch claims she made a confession which she said was under duress. "Nafeek had no access to legal counsel until after a court in Dawadmi sentenced her to death by beheading in 2007."

Comment: The State Department is supposedly eager to defend the African country of norther Mali from so-called Islamists, but it has excellent relations with the heart of barbarism, the Saudi princes.

Comment: The Saudi state, a cesspool of ignorance, superstition and macho barbarism is what the State Department calls a "moderate".

Interesting Split - "Reform" U.S. Jews
Split with AIPAC over Punishing PA

January 1, 2013 Ha'aretz reports that reform Jewish groups in the U.S. (the largest religious grouping of Jews in the U.S.) are opposing AIPAC's call to punish the Palestinian Authority for its recent move at the U.N. to gain recognition as a state.

Commment: The split among U.S. Jews is far more interesting than the actual U.N. action. Observers like Lenni Brenner and Norman Finkelstein have been describing the fall off of support for Zionism among U.S. Jews for some time now.

End of 2012 Headline Stories

Most Israelis Think Gaza Attack a Failure

December 27. A poll conducted by the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at Hebrew University in Jerusalem found that only 26% of Israelis believe the November attack on Gaza was a victory for Israel.

Comment: Harry Truman, of course, was the U.S. President who used atomic bombs on the civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To see the kind of work this "peace" institute is doing note that recepients of the Truman Peace Prize include Colin Powell and Dennis Ross.

900 Children Taken by Israel in 2012, Up 29%

Dec. 22 The Palestinian Ministry Of Detainees reported that this year witnessed a sharp increase in Israeli violations against Palestinian children, and said that Israeli soldiers kidnapped this year 900 Palestinian children comparing to 700 kidnapped last year.

Palestinian Farmer Shot in Back in Gaza by Israeli Army

Dec. 17. The Palestine Chronicle reports that on the 16th "in al-Faraheen, Gaza, Israeli Occupation Forces shot and wounded an unarmed 22 year old farmer, Mohammed Qdeih, from behind. Mohamed and nine others went out to their fields in the early afternoon, walking approximately 250 meters from the Israeli border."

Zuabi Barred from Running in Israeli Election

Because she wanted to bring aid to Gaza on board the Mavi Marmara Hanin Zuabi was barred from seeking re-election to the Israeli parliment.

According to Zuabi, "the members of the elections committee blatantly ignored the unequivocal advice of the Attorney General, which said there is no legal basis for the disqualification." "It is now clear that the elections committee is a political body meant to harm the representatives of the Arab public, and has nothing to do with democracy," she said. "Instead of holding a public debate, they wish to silence me and with me a whole demographic, and we will not cooperate with such silencing."

Comment: "Oh, but the Arabs of Israel can vote and have full democratic rights so charges of apartheid are just blood libel"

Update:

The Israeli Supreme Court did overrule the Elections Committee decision. But see this piece in Ha'aretz where the writer explains that Arabs are barred on ridiculous grounds and that is overturned and for balance actual Jewish racist parties are allowed to run also.

Nobel Laureates Say "Stop the Guns to Israel"

Nobel Prize Winners and Others Call for Weapons Boycott After Gaza Attack

Egypt Prosecutor Says Nobel Prize Winner is Committing Espionage

An Egyptian lawyer close to the Morsi-Muslim Brotherhood group is filing a complaint with the state prosecutor claiming that Mohannad El Baradei, Egypt's Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Hamdein Sabahy and Amr Moussa, as well as Wafd party leader Sayed Badawi are committing espionage and are organizing to overthrow the Egyptian government.

Israel Steals $120 Mil in Palestinian Money

Dec. 3. Israeli Minister Steinitz has announced that he won't transfer $120 million in tax money due the Palestinian Authority this month. According to Ynet he's withholding the money because of PA President Abbas "provocation and an attempt to further a state without recognizing Israel, demilitarization or any security arrangements.

Comment: They took the money because Abbas insulted "Zionism" or "the state of Israel" or didn't pledge allegience to Israel or because they just want the money. They do what they want. Eventually they'll give some of it back if they're pushed a bit by the U.S.

Greenwald Takes Apart Breathless AP Revelation about Iran

500 Egyptians Break Through to Gaza

Nov. 20 Hundreds of activists traveled into Gaza during the Israeli attack. Only a few were going to be admitted, but in the end all 500 got through.

BTW here's a good list of facts about the Gaza Strip.Gaza for Beginners

20 Month Old Burned to Death by Israeli Bomb on the West Bank

Nov. 20. The infant Najib Ahmed Najib was in his bed in his home near Qalandia when an Israeli tear gas bomb was shot into his house and the heat ignited his bed. He received terrible burns and died.

Comment: What is the excuse for this outrage? No missiles fly from the West Bank at Israel.

Activists Had Carrier Pigeons on Board the "Estelle"

Oct. 30. The Israeli website Ynet news says that Israeli commandos who took the Swedish ship the "Estelle" found several pigeons. The "pigeons carried digital tags, which were attached around their legs, containing photos of Israeli soldiers as they seized the ship." One of the activists on the boat, Yonatan Shapira, confirmed the pigeons had been brought aboard as a way to communicate with the media.

On October 25 Amira Hass in Ha'aretz wrote that some of the commandos removed the upper clothing of a female passenger baring her breats in full view of male soldiers. As we have already reported some aboard the ship were electric shocked with tasers.

Comment1: When they seize aid missions to Gaza the Israeli sailors/guards seize (steal) any video or still pictures to prevent truthful images to be distributed.

Comment2: The whole excuse for the blockade of Gaza is that weapons might be on the boats. Of course, they could inspect and let the ship go on its way, but that's not how these bullies operate

Israel Threatens Lebanon Again

Oct. 29 In a Reuters article quoted in the Israeli site Ynet news under the headline "IDF Threatens Repeat of Lebanon War" the paper said http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4298668,00.html a "high ranking" officer outlined plans for an attack on Lebanon. He said, "Due to a whole range of considerations – legitimacy, our non-indifference to the treaty, effectiveness and other factors – cluster use is expected to be reduced in combat in the rural areas," the officer told foreign journalists."

comment1: The "only demoKKracy in the Middle East" never signed the anti-cluster bomb treaty as it has neversigned the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

Israeli Commandos Seize Activists in International Waters

Oct. 20. 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. The "Estelle", the Ship to Gaza Sweden ship that has been traveling since June has been seized by Israeli commandos and its passengers and contents taken to Ashdod. The Israeli website Ynet quotes Israeli activist Dror Feiler who took part in the Swedish ship to Gaza as saying the boat was attacked in international waters at 10:15 a.m. local time

The boat registered in Finland and owned by Swedes was carrying "two olive trees, 41 tons of cement, books, toys, and medical equipment." according to the paper. Nevertheless it quotes an Israeli Defense Ministry spokesperson as saying "has a right to operate at sea to prevent the smuggling of arms to terror organizations."

The group's website was down for some time probably via cyberattack. Their Facebook page still operates.

Obama Readies Drone Attack

October 16. The Associated Press reports that's the Obama Administration is getting drones ready for a strike against Libyans who killed four Americans at the Benghazi consulate. It says they're making haste for political reasons.

Comment: They don't make any pretense about observing international law, do they? Libya is not a state at war with the U.S. Why doesn't the administration ask their government to act, to round up suspects and extradite them if necessary.

88 Killed by Egypt Police Since Morsi Takeover

October 15. Egypt's paper al-Ahram says that a Cairo-based rights outfit over 200 cases of police brutality - including killings, torture and kidnappings - during President Morsi's first 100 days in office.

see the article here

Comment: The people should never have left the street. The Muslim Brotherhood has made a deal with Egypt's officer caste and the U.S. government.

Is Assange on Obama's Death List?

It appears that Wikileaks publisher Julian Assange is being considered an "enemy of the United States". Through a freedom of information request that grew out of a case of a cyber analyst who attended rallies in favor of Wikileaks it has been found out that the U.S. is treating Wikileaks and Assange as if they were al-Qaeda. The possible offense the U.S. is investigating in regard to the analyst is a violation of section 104d of the Military Code "communicating with the enemy".

This is the speech of Julian Assange addressing a side meeting of the UN General Assembly on September 26, 2012. You can hear him speak these words on 9/27 Democracy Now!

Wikileaks is a publication, no different than the New York Times or CNN. Both seek "inside information". Both filter out material that would actually put people in danger. The only difference is that Wikileaks uses the internet more cleverly to allow sources give information anonymously.

Comment: All this worry about the "enemy" while the Obama Administration is winking its eye while the real Al-Qaeda is allowed into Syria to overthrow Assad.

Comment2: What they hate about Assange is that he revealed war crimes and the extent of civillian deaths in Iraq.

Comment3: The big media disgracefully goes along with persection of Assange, "distancing" themselves from this fellow publisher.

Comment4: The big money collecting companies won't handle Wikileaks accounts anymore simply because the U.S. government asked them to stop. Wikileaks has never been convicted of any crime.

Netanyahu Cries "Wolf" Yet Again

Sept. 17. The big U.S. media let the Israeli Prime Minister appear on two top Sunday TV shows and he warned about Iran's alleged nuclear bomb program. Assuming that Americans understand world affairs as a football game he said, "You know, they're in the last 20 yards, and you can't let them cross that goal line." He provided no evidence that Iran has started to build bombs. His big scary word was "capability" meaning he wants the U.S. to declare that Iran has all the know-how and materials to make a bomb and therefore has to be attacked.

Certain facts contradict Netanyahu's claim

Attack Causes Severe Damage at U.S. Base in Afghanistan

Sept. 16. It was "the most destructive single strike on Western matériel in the 11-year war" according to U.S. military sources. Eight jets were destroyed or heavily damaged. Lossess were estimated to be $200 million.

This happened after eleven years of war, the "training" of hundreds of thousands of supposedly friendly Afghan troops and Obama's "surge".

Comment: Do we need more reasons to attend the Oct. 7 Anti-War rally in Harlem?

Palestinian and Israeli Try to Burn Themselves in Separate Incidents

September 9. The Jerusalem Telegraph Agency (JTA) says a Palestinian man and an Israeli man tried to set themselves on fire in separate incidents. Both were in distress over money problems. On Sunday Abu Nada of Gaza City died after setting himself on fire.

Jimmy Carter Denounces Corrie Suit Decision

September 1. "The killing of an American peace activist is unacceptable," said former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. "The court's decision confirms a climate of impunity, which facilitates Israeli human rights violations against Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Territory." The Carter Cener press release notes that the British government vigorously protested the killing of its citizen James Miller in Gaza the same time Rachel was killed and "threatened to seek the extradition of the Israeli soldiers in question". The family received $2 million in damages.

Comment: You don't hear a word from Barack Obama about Rachel Corrie. And threatening to extradite Israeli soldiers...you got to be kidding.

Lying Judge Clears Israel of Blame in Corrie Death

August 28. The revealing part of his decision is how Israeli Judge Oded Gershon described the totally non-violent International Solidarity Movement of which Rachel Corrie was a member. According to the Israeli site Ynet news he said it "abuses the human rights discourse to blur its actions which are de facto violence." and further that "This included an army of activists serving as 'human shields' for terrorists wanted by Israeli security forces, financial and logistical aid to Palestinians including terrorists and their families, and disruption of the sealing of suicide bombers' houses."

With that fantastic collection of lies as the basis of his thinking it's a given that Gershon would dismiss the civil suit of the parents of Rachel Corrie and that's exactly what he did. Ynet news says the judge concluded because in 2003 there was a "war time situation" and that the IDF had tried to keep people out of the area the Israeli government bore no blame for what happened.

More coverage here.

Masters of War Had a Great Year

August 28. The year 2011 was a sweet one for weapon selling companies. U.S. arms sales were at a record high, triple what they were in 2010 and double what they were any other year. So says the New York Times after looking at a government after looking at a new U.S. Congressional Research Office report. The Times attributes it worries about Iran.

And Israel is up there to. It's the eighth biggest arms exporter according to the Israeli business newspaper Globes.

Comment: And who besides Israel is spreading the stupid fears of Iranian "attack", the U.S. government eager to sell jets and bombs, Saudi Arabia with its sectarian hatred of non-Wahabbi Muslims or the arms companies themselves.

It's not true that U.S. Middle East policy is only about oil or even obeying the Israel lobby. It's also about selling guns. Exports are one of the few bright spots for U.S. economy.

Israeli Army Turns Back "Welcome" Guests

August 26 local time 7:30 p.m. The Israeli peace group Gush Shalom reports that the Israeli army turned back all the guests of the Bethlehem governor who had invited them to Bethlehem. They declared the Allenby Crossing a "closed military zone" and made everyone go back to Jordan. ""They did not even let us get off the bus," said Olivia Zemor of Paris, one of the organizers of the visit. "They collected our passports and a few minutes later returned them with each and every passport stamped 'Entry denied'. The soldiers refused to give any explanation, they just said - that's it, your entry is denied, go back to Jordan."

Comment: When these same activists had tried to come into the West Bank via Tel Aviv airport they were smeared as "infiltrators" and told to come through Jordan. So they did and the lying Israeli authorities kept them out anyway.

"Welcome to Palestine" Approaching Israeli Checkpoint

Powerful Rabbi Calls for Annihilation of Iran

August 26. The Israeli media says Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef is calling for Jews to pray for the annihilation of Iran. This former Israeli Sephardic Chief Rabbi is the head of the Shas Party an important part of Netanyahu's governing coalition. According to the Israeli media network Arutz Sheva his words translated as "cut off our enemies and all those who want to harm us with evil and destroy them off the face of the earth." Ha'aretz Israel's "paper of record" reports that he was talking about Iran and Hezbollah. "When we say 'may our enemies be struck down' on Rosh Hashana, it shall be directed at Iran, the evil ones who threaten Israel. God shall strike them down and kill them," said Yosef."

Last week Yosef was beseeched by various members of the government and military seeking his support for an attack on Iran.

Comment: Apparently Yosef has given his OK to a blitzkrieg. Of course, if things go awry he'll deceptively say he's merely praying for it not calling for the IDF to open the bombardment. That's what the extremists rabbis said when one of their followers murdered Rabin

Comment2: An Israeli professor in the right-wing site Ynetnews rationally noted that U.S. Joint Chief of Staff head General Martin Dempsey "punched Bibi and Barak in the face" reminding them Israel by itself could not smash up Iran and that the U.S. was not going to do it.

Comment: Zionists sites are pointing to a call by Hamas leader calling for annihilation of Jews and Americans. Here is the video edited by Memri : Have not seen any Palestinian sources denying it. Of course, if true it's atrocious.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Says Corrie Investigation Wasn't "Credible"

August 23. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro met with the Corrie family awaiting a ruling in their civil suit in the 2003 death of their daugther Rachel. According to Haaretz Shapiro told the family that the Israeli investigation had not been "credible". The verdict is expected Tuesday.

Iran Takes Israeli Threats to U.N.

August 23. Haaretz reported today that Iran is taking Israel's aggressive threats to the U.N. Security Council. "Threats made by Israeli officials to strike Iran's nuclear facilities represent a violation of the United Nations charter, Iran's deputy UN envoy wrote in a letter to the Security Council's president this week"

Comment1: Am reminded about the Cherokee who took threats of their removal to the U.S. courts and won, only to be removed by Indian hater President Andrew Jackson

Comment2: Iran's empty threat to "annihilate Israel" if attacked, of course, only serves Netanyahu's agenda.

Saudi Jailers Half-Way Through Carrying Out Brutal Sentence

August 22. The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights reports that Saudi Arabian jailers have lashed an Egyptian businesswoman Naglaa Yahya Wafa 300 times as part of her sentence. EOHR says, "Ms. Wafa, who was found guilty on the 14th of June 2011 and sentenced to 5 years in prison and 500 strikes with a whip, was not permitted legal representation throughout 13 court sessions" She is being beaten with the whip 50 times a week and this will continue 4 more weeks. EOHR demands the immediate release of Ms. Wafa.

The Egyptian paper al-Ahram says the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood is insisting on "clarification" of the sentence. Reportedly

Comment: The barbarian kings and princes that rule the Arabian peninsuala are infamous for their religious fanaticism, cruelty and greed. In June a man was executed for witchcraft and adultery. The Saudi Arabian police actually have an Anti-Witchcraft Unit. According to a reviewer in a new book by foreign correspondent Karen Elliot House she mentions that despite its vast wealth "40 percent of Saudis live on less than $850 per month and almost 20 percent live on less than $480 per month."

Comment2: Of course Saudi Arabia is beloved of the U.S. for it's "moderation" (meaning it takes orders when the U.S. wants more oil on the market).

Comment3: And a few days ago Candice Cohen-Ahnine, a French-Jewish wife of a Saudi prince, fell (or was pushed) out a fourth storey apartment window to her death. She was in a custody battle with the prince. They separated because he told her that he was obligated to take another wife, but that Cohen-Ahnine could remain as his second wife.

He's Outraged, "They Let Women Testify"

August 19. "They let women testify". This is one of the charges Ovadiah Yoseph head of Israel's powerful Shas Party let fly against Israeli judges. At his Saturday "lesson" he declared Israeli judges "wicked" and unfit to even witness a marriage.

Traditionally women are not allowed to testify in court proceedings in Orthodox Judaism. (This has only slightly changed in cases of sexual harassment where no other witnesses are present.) Though Orthodox Judaism controls family law in Israel other law operates by Western principles.

Comment: Ha'aretz reports that Israeli defense officials are rushing to meet with Yosef to get his blessing for (or against) an attack on Iran.

Israeli Minister Claims African Migrants No Less a Threat than Iran

August 18. After an arrest of two Eritreans in an alleged rape case Interior Minister Eli Yishai told Ynet news that "“the threat from infiltrators is no less severe than the Iranian threat. The incident today proved how much we have lost the sense of personal security for Israeli citizens.” The Jerusalem Post says Yishai is pushing to have the government jail all 60,000 illegal African migrants in Israel.

Comment: If you can stand it read the comments to the article, almost all racist. Here's one from Puma063 "Let it be known that the Black man owns himself the 'right' to take (rape) any woman he wants to. He will rape his grandmother too. This is a fact. I know because in South Africa we hear about this daily. Israel must wake up because I fear it is already too late!"

Reuters Claims Nasrallah Said Rockets
Could Kill Tens of Thousands of Israelis

August 17. Reuters news agency claims Hezbollah leader Nasrallah said he knew the location of high value Israeli targets and that "Hitting these targets with a small number of rockets will turn ... the lives of hundreds of thousands of Zionists to real hell, and we can talk about tens of thousands of dead." There was no explaination of the context of the comment , whether this had to do with an attack on Iran or on Hezbollah.

Comment: Al-Akbar says that the remarks were a counter-threat to an attack on Lebanon.

Comment2: Of course this is tit for tat. See the Israeli threat to commit war crimes in Lebanon during the next war by scrolling down to July 7.

"I Saw a Lynch with My Own Eyes"

August 17. Ha'aretz reports that a Palestinian was gravely injured in an attack that an eyewitness called a "lynch". Three Palestinians walking in West Jerusalem were attacks by "dozens" of youths screaming racist slurs against Arabs.

Guardian Reports Ecuador Grants Wikileaks Founder Asylum

August 15 The Guardian of the UK reports, "Ecuador's president, Rafael Correa, has agreed to grant Julian Assange asylum, officials within Ecuador's government have said. The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up at Ecuador's London embassy since 19 June, when he officially requested political asylum."

Comment: Though Assange had not even been charged with a crime, Paypal and the credit card companies have stopped allowing themselves to be used to transfer money to Wikileaks. According to Wikileaks there have been 620 days of banking blockade.

Morsi Sends Several SCAF Leaders to Retirement

August 12. Egyptian President Morsi has fired the top two Egyptian SCAF leaders. Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, the defense minister and top military chief, and his deputy, Gen. Sami Anan have apparently accepted their dismissal.

The Washington Post reports, "The president also announced that he had suspended a controversial constitutional amendment the military generals passed on the eve of Morsi’s election giving themselves vast powers and emasculating the role of the presidency. "

Comment1: Let's see if this is the beginning of something real or just a change of faces. Remember Salvador Allende of Chile in 1972 dismissed a general and appointed "loyal" Pinochet. Pinochet led a bloody coup against Allende the next year. A good next step would be to OPEN UP THE JAILS and let out all the political prisoners.

Comment2: Here's a brand new Latuff cartoon on the subject. Morsi kicking out Tantawi in the style of Erogan of Turkey. However, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi who "explained" the "Virginity Tests" (virtual rapes of women prisoners) has become Defense Minister!

Soldier Get 45 for Killing Two Palestinians

August 12. On the first day of the ground operation of the Gaza Massacre (January 9, 2009) two Palestinian women were gunned down as they walked on the street holding white flags. In what H'aaretz says is a major case "Staff Sgt. S', from Givati Brigade will be convicted of a relatively light offense - illegal use of weapons." He gets 45 days in jail.

Comment: Notice Israeli press censorship doesn't allow the man's name to be published even though he has been convicted. Of course, if he were Palestinian his name would be splashed across front pages from the moment of suspicion.

Says Israeli Intelligence Chief Preventing Iran Attack

August 11. People don’t realize what a miracle is taking place in this country. A revolt by the Israeli military/intelligence establishment and Israel’s best reporters, helped along by President Shimon Peres and ultimately enabled by the Obama administration, is stopping an insane war from being launched by Israel’s two ideologically insane political leaders, a war they’ve been planning for years.

U.S. Policymakers Think Syria Needs al-Qaeda

August 9. "The FSA needs al-Qaeda now." FSA stands for the "Free Syrian Army" and Ed Husain is making this statement not on some mad Islamist extremist website, but as "Senior Fellow for Middle Eastern Studies" for the very proper "Council on Foreign Relations" site. Madeleine Albright, Robert Rubin and Colin Powell are among its Officers and Directors.

Palestinian Groups Denounce Attack on Egyptian Border Guards

August 7. An attack on an Egyptian army post in northern Sinai left 15 soldiers dead. The attack was denounced by all Palestinian resistance forces including mainstream ones (Fatah, PFLP, DFLP, popular resistance committees, Hamas) and even marginal Jihadi forces (Islamic Jihad). I was very disappointed to see a few Palestinians try to use the incident to score points against other Palestinian factions. But to most Palestinians, it was clear from its pattern and timing that this was another Israeli false flag operation stretching back to the Lavon affair in the 1950s when Israeli agents planted bombs in Egypt against Western interests to sabotage relations between those countries and Egypt. An attempt to incite Egyptians against others (Palestinians or Iranians) must be exposed and thwarted especially when there is an ongoing existential struggle. Iran Missile Tests and the "Chokehold"

August 4. An Associated Press article published on the site of the Israeli paper Ynet News tells about Iranian succuess with short range missiles. An Iranian general praises the accuracy of their short range missiles and their ability to hit things at sea. The missiles have a range of 180 miles and and first glance would be of little concern to far away Israel. However they should be of interest to America with its battle group in the Persian Gulf and its concern for the Strait of Hormuz.

The strait has been described as the "world's most famous oil chokepoint". See other maps of strait here and here . The U.S. has stockpiled oil, the U.A.E. has opened a new pipeline that would bypass the strait. The U.S. military claims it can clear the strait if Iran sinks oil tankers, but this, of course, is all uncertain. It also possible we could see gas at $5 a gallon thanks to Israeli demands for Middle East power and U.S. inability to restrain its Cossacks.

Israeli Who Set Himself on Fire in Social Protest Dies

July 21. Moshe Silman whose $1,000 debt to the Israel National Health became the road for total personal mightmare has died. He set himself on fire at a Tel Aviv social protest. Here in the You Tube description is the translation of a letter he gave to someone an hour before his act. The video is of protesters reading his letter in Hebrew.

Stanley Heller reads the letter in a podcast here. July 22. News that a second Israeli has set himself on fire. He's an unnamed wheelchair-bounded veteran.

Who is Behind Latest Atrocity in Bulgaria?

July 20. The UN Security Council was quick to condemn the bus bombing in Bulgaria which left seven dead. The Israeli Prime Minister said it was the fault of Iran then later said is was a Hizbullah operation. He does this without any specific evidence, but because of similarities to the case of a man arrested in Cyprus who said he was planning a similar operation on behalf of Hizbullah. Bulgarian news reports said Thursday evening that authorities suspect that the bomber was a Swedish citizen of Algerian and Finnish descent who they said was imprisoned by the U.S. in 2002 in Guantanamo Bay after being associated with Islamic terrorist groups.

Comment: Sounds like an al-Qaeda attack, doesn't it. Iran would be mad to do this, but who knows.

Comment2: Read the doubts of Israeli writer Yossi Gurvitz

Israel Threatens New, More Brutal Lebanon War

July 7. The Israeli paper Ha’aretz has a major story about a press briefing where a high Israeli army officer told of plans for a massive violent attack on Lebanese civilian areas.

This is the first sentence in the story, “Six years after the outbreak of the Second Lebanon War, the IDF is saying openly that Israel is preparing for another Lebanon war.”

Brigadier General Hertzi Halevy from the army’s Northern Command spoke to journalists on July 5 with this chilling warning, "The Goldstone report will pale in comparison to what will be here next time. There is no choice but to fight against the enemy where he is, and that is in the heart of a populated area. "

The Goldstone report was a UN sponsored report that detailed Israeli brutalities and war crimes in Israel’s onslaught against Gaza in 2008-9.

Very plainly he was threatening a much more brutal attack on Lebanon than it suffered in 2006 when over 1,000 were killed and when over a million cluster bomb were distributed over the southern part of the country.

And what is the terrible things Lebanese have done to merit threats of horrors? Even the writer of the Ha'aretz article, Gili Cohen, points out that there have not been recent acts of violence between Hezbollah and the Israeli military.

Comment: The late Israeli human rights activist Israel Shahak used to say that Israel doesn’t hide its war preparations. It always says out loud who it will attack and see what reaction it gets.

Comment2: A quick google search of General Halevi’s name found not one reference to this major threat in the Times, Washington Post or other major US paper.
Open threats of war crimes by Israel are considered quite proper in the US corporate media.

Arafat Widow Asks PA to See if PA President Murdered Via Polonium

July 5. Al-Jazeera reports that Suha Arafat has asked the Palestinian Authority to exhume the body of her husband to see if he was murdered by radioactive poisoning. Al-Jazeera published a startling nine month investigation saying the polonium had been found on various personal articles items given to them to study by the late Palestine Authority president's widow.

Comment: It has long been suspected that Yasser Arafat was murdered. He had been in good health and suddenly began having strange and unexplained symptoms. French doctors could not explain why he died. As to who did it? Remember the mood in Israel in those days, unending villification and demonization of Arafat. And polonium-210 only comes from nuclear reactors. In September 2004 the Guardian of the UK reported that then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said that he would deal with Arafat as he had dealt Hamas leaders Yassin and al-Rantissi, both of whom were assassinated. The Nobel Peace Prize winner died two months later on November 11.

If Israel is involved the question would be how the polonium reached Arafat. Effectively he had been imprisoned in his Ramallah compound. In 2009 Farouk Quaddoumi made a sensantional charge the Abbas himself was involved in killing Arafat.

Richard Silverstein on Antiwar.com says suspicions of Israeli involvement "leap" to the forefront.

March to Embassies to Protest New Sanctions on Iran

July 1. New York. A small but determined group braved 96 degree weather to march to three European and the US embassy to protest new sanctions on Iran. The protest was led by Havaar. Havaar is anti-sanctions, anti-foreign intervention and part of Iran's Green movement of democracy reformers. Four TSVN videos here:

Will the Media Really Look into the Past of Late Israeli PM Shamir?

July 1. Former Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir has died. The New York Times had a long obit talking about "his government’s policy of patient, determined, unyielding opposition to territorial concessions". No mention of the man's fanaticism. During the first years of World War II Shamir was a leader of a Zionist group in Palestine nicknamed "the Stern gang" that tried to make an alliance with Nazi Germany. Yes, you read that right. See an article Stanley Heller wrote about Shamir a few years back on Counterpunch. And there are more details here.

The New York Times mentions that Shamir may have been involved in the assassination of the first United Nations mediator Count Folke Bernadotte because Shamir's group didn't like Bernadotte's proposed Palestine partition plans. The Times did not mention this: "Bernadotte, a Swede with family ties to the Swedish King, gained international recognition through his work as head of the Swedish Red Cross during World War II. Bernadotte used his position to negotiate with Heinrich Himmler and save thousands of Jews from concentration camps, although many argue that he could have done more had he been less cautious in negotiations." This from the Jewish Virtual Library. That meant exactly nothing to a fanatic like Shamir.

Comment: An error here. The New York Times did not mention the assassination of Bernadotte at all! It was the Washington Post that said that Shamir "helped plot the assassination". It also mentioned that Shamir and Lehi were "even offering to cooperate with the Germans to rid Palestine of British rule."

Egypt Pres Calls for Freedom for Sheikh
Convicted in '93 WTC Bombing

June 29. In his inauguration speech Egypt's President Mohammad Morsi called for freedom of prisoners including Sheikh Omar Abdul-Rahman, who is serving a life term in a US prison for his role in the '93 bombing of the World Trade Center. According to As'ad AbuKhalil Morsi did not say a word about Palestine.

Comment: How much does this say about the real intentions of the Moslem Brotherhood?

Joe Lieberman Calls for Heavy Involvement in Syria War

The Guardian of the UK quotes a spokesperson for CT Sentator Joe Lieberman as saying that Senator Lieberman has "called for the US to provide robust and comprehensive support to the armed Syrian opposition" In particular he wants weapons and training to go to the Free Syrian Army.

Comment: Syria is indeed a disgusting tyranny which may have killed 10,000 in the last year's repression. Max Blumenthal estimates there are 100,000 in its prisons. On the other hand the Free Syrian Army is more or less the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood. Its military units all have names all drawn from the early days of Islam.

Columnist Describes Hunting Africans in Israeli City

Author Reveals "Magic Carpet" Often Fatal

June 14. One of the supposed great success stories of Israel was the brining in of 50,000 Yemeni Jews in 1949 and 1950. The Israeli story is tens of thousands of backward people "whisked" to modern Israel. "According to a new book, this symbol is as hollow and glamorized as a fairy tale", says Vered Lee. The book is called "The Exodus of the Yemenite Jews - A Failed Operation and a Formative Myth," Dr. Esther Meir-Glitzenstein.

It reveals that the exodus, whose propaganda name was "Operation Magic Carpet", was incompetently organized and that over 800 people died in camps in Yemen that had been organized by the American Joint Distribution Committee and the Israeli govenment. The imam of Yemen (who ruled North Yemen) organized a deal with the Zionists. He let (encouraged?) Yemini Jews to leave and kept their property and Israel got 50,000 new citizens.

The author of the book is a a senior lecturer at Ben Gurion University. She said the Yeminis died because of "incompetent planning, apathy and abandonment" some of which she regarded as criminal.

Israel to Put Tens of Thousands of African Migrants in Tents

June 8. The Netanyahu government has announced plans to build detention camps with 20 to 25,000 tents for African refugees and migrants who come to Israel to seek a better life. Literally almost none are granted refugee status even though in most other countries a majority of Sudanese and Eritrean get that status. Many are living in Tel Aviv, the site of race riots a few weeks ago.

Ha'aretz reports "Three of those detention centers will be built near the Ketziot prison in the near future, and will be connected to water, electric and sewage infrastructures which the Defense Ministry have been building over the last several weeks." It goes on to say the plan is to ensure that all African migrants who enter Israel will be taken directly to the prison camps where they will live "for long periods of time". An Israeli court has ruled that it's OK to deport refugees back to South Sudan at will.

Comment: Estimates are 50 to 60,000 African refugees are inside Israel. The mob screams about how impossible it is to take care of all of them. 20 years ago Israel took in a million from Russia half of whom were non-Jews. Of course all of them were "white"

Israel Airport Cops Demand US Citizens' Email

June 6. Three Americans with Arab sounding names have been forced by Israeli security cops to allow access to their personal email accounts as a price of coming into Israel according to Ha'aretz.

In once case "the security woman read through every email with certain key words (including "Palestine," "Israel," "West Bank" and "International Solidarity Movement"), reading some lines out loud as well as some chats between her and her friend regarding their upcoming trip. Then she recorded a number of her contacts' names, emails and telephone numbers." They questioned the woman for five hours and then refused her entry to Israel.

The Shin Bet confirmed to Ha'aretz that this was the procedure and that it was proper.

Comment: No word if the U.S. embassy had any objections

She Apologizes For "Cancer" Comment, but Not To Africans

May 28. Miri Regev, member of the Knesset (Likud) and former Israeli Armuy spokeswoman apologized for calling African migrants in Israel a "cancer", but not to the Africans. She apologized to cancer patients who might have been offended.

"When I compared the migrant worker phenomenon to cancer I was referring to the way the phenomenon had spread, and not anything else. If anyone took it otherwise and was consequently offended, I apologize and I surely did not intend to hurt either Holocaust survivors or cancer patients," she said.

She had no words of apology for comparing human beings to a deadly disease.

Comment: "Holocaust survivors". How did the Holocaust get into this? Did she also call the African's "Nazis"?

Comment2: In addition to delivering a sort of apology Regev whined about how Peace Now compared West Bank settlements to "cancer".

Israeli Media Claims about Africans are a Lie

May 28. According to Nurit Wurgaft writing in Ha'aretz, the Israeli media have been claiming that 40% of the crimes committed in the Tel Aviv area have involvement with "refugee seekers". And it's a lie.

She cites "Gilad Natan of the Knesset's Research and Information Center. He found that out of 24,702 files opened by the Tel Aviv police in the first half of 2010, only 177 were against Africans." That's less than 1%.

Ha'aretz Wants UN Troops in Syria

May 28. Ha'aretz, the most "liberal" Israeli paper, the "New York Times" of Israel has called for the "international community" to go on attack again.

It wrote, "Just as the international community hastened to assist the military action to get rid of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, just as the Arab countries found the political means to remove the Yemeni president, and just as Saddam Hussein's regime was brought down with force - now that the "Annan Peace Plan" backed by the United Nations has failed miserably to bring about change in Syria, it is no longer possible for the world body to make do with feeble declarations of censure."

Comment: There is a country that ethnically cleansed 513 towns and villages, stole hundreds of billions in property, made hundreds of thousands refugees, killed tens of thousands of innocent neighbors and set up an apartheid system. Before it calls for invasions and occupations by the UN perhaps this country should repent and get its own house in order.

Israeli Mob Attacks Africans

May 24. Ha'aretz reports that a mob of 1,000 Israelis attacked black Africans in south Tel Aviv. The Africans are mostly from Sudan and Eritrea who have crossed the border into Israel to see refuge and work.

"Following Wednesday's violent protest against African migrants in Tel Aviv, Likud MK Danny Dannon called to remove African asylum seekers from population centers in Israel." The Likud is the party of Prime Minister Netanyahu who has yet to say anything on the mob attack.

"Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai began a campaign on Thursday that calls to imprison and deport illegal migrants."

The mob smashed a car window and looted a store owned by migrants. "We stole everything" a young looter said proudly. The Israeli government has already decided to send the migrants back to their home country or into a detention center, but is not moving fast enough for the mob who blame the migrants for crime.

Knesset Speaker Rivlin made this comment" We must not use the same language anti-Semites use against us. We are a people that suffered a great deal of incitement and harassment, and we have an obligation to be extra sensitive and moral,” said Rivlin. "

Comment 1: An earlier Ha'aretz article reported: "Israel grants refugee status to almost nobody and does not even examine the cases of Sudanese and Eritreans." It also pointed out Israel is building the largest detention center for migrants anywhere in the world.

Comment 2: The black migrants are frequently referred to as "infiltrators" as if they were agents of a foreign military bent on conquest or sabotage.

Comment 3: Important analysis here compares Israel to 1938 Germany

Prisoners Hunger Agony Wins Many Demands

May 15. Solitary confinement will be ended. Prisoners will be allowed visits from family members. 100 bodies of Palestinian fighters and others buried in a secret Israeli graveyard will be returned to their families. These are some of the fruits of the epoch Palestinian prisoners hunger strike that went on en mass for nearly a month and for some over 70 days.

According to the International Middle East Media Center

The agreement states that detainees, held under administrative detention, will have their so-called "secret files" (that even defense attorneys do not have access to) examined by legal committees, and that, if Israel fails to provide "security information' against them, they will not receive an extension to their administrative detention.

Palestinian Minister of Detainees, Issa Qaraqe' said in a press conference that the Israeli prison officials agreed to improvements in prison living conditions and other unspecified changes.

Palestinian have long known about the existence of a graveyard where the interred were only known as numbers. The Israeli government denied the graveyard existed.

The Israeli paper Ha'aretz said that for their part Palestinian prisoners agreed to halt "terrorism" from within the prisons.

Comment: Imagine the Israelis had a "Numbers Graveyard" where they used corpses as a bargaining chip. Pretty damned low.

Comment2: What is the "terrorism" within the prison that the Shin Bet is so happy to stop?

Report: Prisoners End Hunger Strike After Winning Concessions

May 14. Israeli papers are reporting that a prisoners committee has called off the hunger strike after they and prison officials have made an agreement to improve prison conditions. Details are sketchy.

On Ynetnews

According to a Palestinian negotiator, Israel agreed to allow prisoners from both the West Bank and Gaza to receive family visits. The visits from Gaza were halted in 2006 after Hamas-linked terrorists in Gaza captured Gilad Shalit. After the soldier was released in a prisoner swap last October, the Palestinians said the ban should be lifted.

He said Israel also agreed to halt its punitive policy of placing prisoners in solitary confinement.

The Shin Bet said that in return the prisoners pledged “to absolutely stop terror activity from inside Israeli jails.” It also said terror group’s commanders outside the jails made a commitment “to prevent terror activity.”

The Palestinian IMEMC news service reports:

The prisoners have received a great deal of support from across the West Bank, Gaza and Israel. A major protest was held in Manger Square in Bethlehem on Friday and Saturday, and processions were held in Umm al-Fahm, Kfar Kana, and Haifa during which youths declared the start of a three day hunger strike of their own as a display of solidarity with the prisoners.

Hunger Strikers Escalate Protest

May 11. Hundreds of Palestinians on hunger strike in Israeli jails said on Friday they would shun vitamin supplements and prison clinics in an escalation of their mass protest against detention conditions.

"We swear we will not retreat. We are potential martyrs. Either we live in dignity or die," prisoner organizers said in a letter announcing the move and which was read out by Hamas's Ismail Haniyeh in the Gaza Strip, during a demonstration.

The Jerusalem Post reports there are 1,600 prisoners on hunger strike.

Two strikers -- Thaer Halahleh and Bilal Diab -- have refused food for 73 days. Ten have refused food for more than 50 days and are now hospitalized. The International Committee of the Red Cross has said that Halahleh, Diab, and four others are in "imminent danger of dying." As the prisoners' health deteriorates, the State Department has been silent.

A very simple way to help is to sign this petition to the State Department from the ADC

No, This is Not Iran

May 6. A religious court ordered a woman to jail indefinitely until she obeys its decree and the government of the country carried out the order. No, not Iran. This took place in Israel. The 60 year old woman (unnamed in the Haaretz article) refuses to give a divorce to her busband unless she gets a better property settlement. The husband has said this is blackmail and has taken it to religious authorities. Over the years the rabbinical court has taken measures against the woman ordering that her passport and drivers license be taken away for instance. She hold firm to her decision and is now in jail. Her appeal (to the rabbinical court) will take place in July.

The state of Israel, a supposed democracy, enforces these rabbinical decisions.

Comment: Long ago the Zionist pioneers (Ben-Gurion and such) gave family and life decisions into the hands of the Orthodox rabbis. For instance there is no civil marriage. Jewish marriages must be performed by Orthodox rabbis. Reform and Conservative rabbis thus cannot perform marriages in two countries, Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Thousands of Jordanians Protest Treaty with Israel

May 5. The Israeli paper Haaretz reports that thousand of people took to the streets across the country of Jordan calling for an end of the peace treat with Israel. Protesters ranged from the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood to left wing groups. "Popular opinion in Jordan is that the 1994 Wadi Araba treaty is a failure". Politicians accuse Israel of not carrying out the treaty especially in regard to access to water sharing.

The paper noted these demonstrations were unusual in that Jordanian rallies usual demanded democratic reforms. There have been 1,000 such protests since late 2010.

Comment: I'm sure the number of these Jordanian protests are a huge surprise to the reader. The Western media likes to hide anger shown towards their puppet kings.

Obama Justice Department Won't Investigate Kent State Massacre

May 4. Using the excuse that there is "insurmountable" legal and evidence problems, the Justice Department told Alan Canfora who was wounded May 4, 1970 that it won't look into the shootings at Ohio's Kent State University, commonly called the Kent State Massacre. This comes after the case seemed to have been reignited after audio experts reexamined a recording of the incident and concluded they heard four shots fired from another part of the campus and also someone shout, "Guard!, All right, prepare to fire!"

(video including archive photos of the Massacre below)

The review had been requested by wounded student, Alan Canfora, Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich and the sister of slain student, Allison Krause. Four students were killed that day at the university in 1970. An anti-Vietnam War protest had just been broken up by clouds of tear gas. National Guardsmen had then marched to the top of a hill and students for the most part went to classes. A classic photo shows the troops a football field away from a parking lot where a dozen or so students were walking. Suddenly the Guardsmen wheeled and opened fire. 61 shots were fired. Four people were killed. About a dozen were wounded. One was 750 feet away from the soldiers.

As you might expect the National Guard spokesman claimed the soldiers felt their lives were in danger. One fact highlights the absurdity of the statement. One of the people killed was William Schroeder who far from being a protester was actually in ROTC, Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Mike Alewitz, a student leader at Kent State in 1970 and now a renown muralist and professor at Central Connecticut State University, each year presents a program about the massacre. On April 30 he showed archived Kent State campus news photos of that day. Among them were two pictures of a Terry Norman who was a Kent State student in 1970 and a FBI informant. One picture shows Norman handing a pistol to soldiers that May day.

There were government investigations, whitewashes really, which concluded with suggestions for "better handling" of protests, etc. etc. No one was punished for the killings. A tiny $600,000 was given in damages to be shared among all the wounded. Governor Rhodes, who was responsible for sending the absurdly overarmed forces to the university was reelected twice.

The Alewitz presentation can be seen here.

A further video interview with Alewitz on April 30 is here.

11 Dead in Abbasseya Massacre

May 3. Cairo. Thugs using military grade weapons killed at least 11 people in the last few days who were sitting in at the Abbasseya neighborhood, outside the Egypt Defense Ministry. Even a machine gun was used against the protesters. The Egyptian military regime did nothing for many hours.

Amnesty International slammed the lack of response by the military to the massacre. "The Egyptian army and security forces initially did little to stop the clashes, which happened in the neighborhood of Abbasseya," read the statement. "The clashes only stopped at around 1 pm after army troops, including armored vehicles, and heavily armed riot police arrived at the scene."

"The army's intervention has come hours too late," Philip Luther, Amnesty's director for the Middle East and North Africa, was quoted as saying in the statement.

Nov. 24. These are the details of the deal with Iran according to the New York Times. Iran stops many aspects of its nuclear program and allows for much closer observation. In return sanctions on Iran are eased somewhat and talk of attack by the U.S. is off the table (at least for 6 months). Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu says he's horrified.

Some Photos here.

The New York Times article here.

Thousands of Protesters are Back in Istanbul's Main Square

June 3. Here's the report from the Guardian (UK)

Al-Dura Denial, Rightwing Madness Gets Official Israeli Seal of Approval

The Israeli government decides that its soldiers didn't kill the little boy 13 years ago. He's alive, killed by his father...or something.

Nov. 29. The AP says it uncovers a graph showing that Iran is doing computer reserach to make nuclear bombs. Glen Greenwald takes a critical look.

August 26. Mid-afternoon local time. Around 100 activists are approaching the Israeli checkpoint at the Jordan/Occupied Palestine border. Hear an interview on our podcast

Alice Walker Won't Allow Israeli Publisher to Translate "Purple"

As Ali Abunimah has pointed out famed novelist (and passenger on Gaza Freedom Flotilla II) Alice Walker is not saying that her classic book "The Color Purple" may not be published in the Hebrew language. She doesn't want an Israeli publisher to do it as she's observering BDS. Read her actual letter to the Israeli publisher in our "Articles" section by clicking here.

Sarsak to Be Freed

The Washington Post reports that the attorney for jailed footballer Mahmoud Sarsak has said that he is to be freed. In return he is ending his 3 month hunger strike. Sarsak has been in prisoner for 3 years without chargges

Columnist Describes Hunting Africans in Israeli City

June 13. Ha'aretz columnist Gideon Levy goes along with an Israeli crew looking for South Sudanese to pick up and deport.

Comment: In all fairness a similar article could be written about the US. The current administration has thrown out over a million Latinos.
